Just got this email from Travelzoo - not my favorite travel site, but they told me first. Excerpting...
From the Travelzoo Newsdesk:

DALLAS--MAY 29, 2009-- American, United, US Airways and several other airlines recently revealed wide-ranging discounts on summer flights from Dallas. The sale fares reach new lows of $49-$89 each way for travel through August to numerous popular domestic destinations.

In many cases, these fares represent savings of more than 50 percent compared to last summer's prices.

Among the sale fares (each way), Dallas to:
- Cancun ... $64

Many destinations are included in these sales. Click below to see more sample fares and to search multiple sites at once with Travelzoo's SuperSearch for fares to any
destination:
Discount Airline Tickets, Affordable Flights, & Low-Cost Airfare from Travelzoo SuperSearch
Or use the trip search site you prefer. I like Sidestep.com, checking nearby airports, flexible dates, cross checking Airfare.com, Priceline, Hotwire, Expedia, Travelocity, and several more.

Of course, you have to add $100+ in taxes & fees, but the bottom lines are appealing. Checked a few dates...

Now, I'd want to say $100 or more by going thru Cancun each way than flying in/out of Coz. The cheap bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is fine, I don't need the pricier shared vans, but then you add round-trip ferry costs plus you never know when the ferries are going to bother running so - you may sit and wait a couple of hours going and may need to leave hours earlier leaving.

$237 taxes included DFW-CUN is a great fare if you can't find DFW-CZM for under $337. :pilot:

Anyway, if you've been searching, you might watch for changes in the next day or so...?

To go along with the above post, I just checked a few random dates with Apple vacations for the Iberostar AI and came up with $1,403.00 for two(taxes included) for a week from Cols. Really cheap for air and AI for a week for two people!! Thanks to this thread 'cause it got me checking for more possible vacation dates.:D

Good prices for sure!!! :)
Just booked ORD-CUN on American non-stop $79 each way(+ taxes).
That is mid-July, flying mid week on both ends.
Going to do Whale Sharks and dive a few days with Aldora.

I haven't noticed any drop in price from Houston to Cozumel or Cancun. :(

You would think Continental would have really great fares from Houston? While searching for packages for our possible two extra divers, we found that American has great fares from Dallas to CZM non stop for one of them, but the other is in South Florida and all the cheap fares from Ft. Meyers, Ft. Lauderdale, or MIA all go through Houston or Atlanta. You'd think there would be resonable non stops from somewhere in Florida to CZM? :shakehead:

Don't try to make sense of air fares. If you think that the distance traveled has anything to do with the fare amount, think again.

Gawd, I've seen that point argued for over 20 years. The airlines do not base fares on flights but what they have to do to compete and fill - which can be complicated. I remember in 1988 people in Dallas driving to Waco to originate trips that connected in DFW for much less than originating in DFW - and free Waco parking then.

Sometimes it's cheaper Lubbock to CZM connecting in IAH than originating Houston; sometimes it's cheaper for the Houston folks; and sometimes it's cheapest to break the fare - figuring LBB-IAH + IAH-CZM. In the 80s & 90s tho, we had to do it all by phone; now you can surf at least.

When I booked my August flights, LBB-CZM or just LBB-IAH were the same base fare, with Cozumel being more expensive only because of extra taxes and fees.

And the surprises never cease - good and bad.

Same thing last year Chicago to Cancun on United was 589 rt, but Milwaukee to Cancun was 329 and you connected in Chicago onto the 589 flight. Makes no sence.

In those cases, couldn't you just get the online boarding passes and then just jump on the second flight out of Chicago? :crafty:
