Just picked up a couple of aftermarket replacemnt batteries for my G9.

The batteries I found are Japanese cell 7.4V 1700mAh batteries, which are supposed to come with a 5 year warranty, so I'm hopeful they will be considerably more powerful than the stock Canon, or even the aftermarket batteries I already own.

Here's were I found them:

Blue Nook - Canon NB-2L / NB-2LH Replacement Battery (1700 mAh - Japanese Cells)

Awesome. I hesitantly picked an eBay one for my G9 for about $10 when I first got the camera just over 1 year ago. It's only 1000 mAh but it's worked like a champ. I've not noticed whether or not it lasts longer but long enough for 2 dives followed by a lot of topside shooting without fully depleting.

Josh, I do already own aftermarket batteries, which I believe are 1100mAh, and using them often over the past 8 months or so, has led me to the conclusion that they do last longer than the factory battery.

So I'm very hopeful these 1700mAh ones will have lots of juice!:D

I have no idea what the supplied canon battery is for the G9 but the G10 is 1050ma. I find it hard to believe there is a battery 70% higher capacity in the same size. But still if its cheap enough and some what larger than stock its got to be good right? ( until it burns up taking your G9 and housing with it).

Some aftermarket batteries are fine, others are much less so, they die after 10 recharges. One thing the big battery guys look at carefully is reliability. BTW I would bet a nickel that they are made in China. It specifically says manufactured using Japanese cells. Very suspicious but if they work so be it. Battery capacity is not the only issue that is important with batteries and battery life, self discharge rates are also important for life.

Just a quick update...

I used these new 1700mAh batteries while shooting topside pics in Thailand last month and got great results. I recall sightseeing the entire day, and taking lots of pictures throughout the day, and the batteries seemed to go strong all day, and last much longer than the other factory and aftermarket batteries I have for the camera.

I've since gone diving a couple of times, but haven't had any dives long enough to provide any numbers on the number of shots I took with one battery charge. However, on the dives I did do, I never saw the battery display show anything less than a full charge the entire time.

Thanks for the update.

Since our trip in February to Bonaire, I've been meaning to give an update on the $10 ebay battery I bought since it's practically useless now. It worked great holding a charge good for a couple of dives over the course of about one year. This trip, it wouldn't last an entire dive! The OE one is still going strong but I might look into one of these 1700mAh units.
