The departure tax & tariffs at the Roatan airport were $34.04 per person when we left in late June 2008. The sign on the wall said it had been effective since April.

For three people, it was $102.12. I paid with six $20 bills and a 5 Lempira note. I got change back in US one dollar bills. Some people told me their change was in Lempiras. I guess it depends on what they have in the cash drawer at the booth when they make change.

Yup. Normally they give you Lempiras back. If you're nice, they'll give you dollars.

With that math, you'll have no problem with these Honduran change kiosk/departure tax guys!

$34.04 x 3 = $102.12

So you gave them $120 (US) + $.90 (in Honduran Money)

You made their heads hurt. Shame on you.

Next time, I'm bringing a bag of US Pennies. Swear to god. Just dump them up there and walk inside to the bar. Let them sort it out.

It's been beat about here a bunch:

They wanted to give me change in dollars, but I actually wanted lempiras (for souvenirs). They seemed surprised but were happy to oblige...

Now go find Honduran Pennies. Yep- 1/100th of a Lempira.

1 Honduran Lempira = $0.05304 US Dollar
1 US Dollar (USD) = 18.85422 Honduran Lempira (HNL)

Thanks LaCuda... my math really sucks.

That would be 1/100th of 5 cents US.

Shown above is the Honduran Penny (upper left then clockwise), the 5 Centavo, the 10, 20, 50 and a US Dime for comparison.

For that US Dime you can get two of the 1 Lempira bills as shown as the background. A Clean and readable "1 Lemp" (pronounced "limp") note is hard to find.

We're just back from a week on Roatan and we paid $69 exactly for two departure taxes. The clerk did not give us any change, and in fact she said the amount was $69. No problem as we had set that amount aside at the beginning of the trip.

We've been on Utila for four months. This trip I have not even seen any coins. They are really not using them any longer. All prices are in whole lempiras. Of course, we're not in an all inclusive, we're on the local economy.

My apologies to Cudabait! I didn't realize he was the last to sign on to this computer and I sent out that message under his name. It was really from LaCuda, not Cudabait.

We leave for AKR in 2 weeks (YAAAAY!!!). Does anyone have more current experience with the departure tax since late June? I am wondering if it is still the same at 34.04 per person or if there have been any changes.

My travel agent told me to set aside $35.00 for the departure tax PLUS $5.00 for an inspection tax. Has anyone experienced a $5.00 charge for an inspection tax?
