NAUI cave 1 is also much more intensive than NSS-CDS basic cave or NACD intro. If I were to start over, I'd go this route.

Edit- I would seriously consider going this route I mean.

I agree NAUI has a great Cave program..... By the way my earlier post was not meant to be rude to you, just was wandering what your justification would be. If you go with NAUI for Cave you will need NTEC which is very similar to DIR.

No sweat, far too much gets misinterpreted on the internet for me to get upset over a post :D

Tommy, that's pretty funny. Gotta love Patrick's "DIR" gear.... Air integrated computer, split fins, pistol grip light, nice snorkel, inflator hose octo, Zeaggle BC, etc. Poster boy for recreational diving. You can tell he gets the gear cheap from SCUBAToys!!! Are the pictures real (from the cavern class) or Photoshop stuff? If real, where in the world is that muddy mess?

I think the $5,000 list of gear he read to me over the phone should bring him back into the Tech world, though. He told me he's trying to get his doubles together and all that stuff and we should be diving it soon. I put together a sidemount system and am starting to play with it. Did a dive the other day and felt good. Just need to play with hose routing some more since I have a mess of hoses around me.

Looks like Buford to me!

Yes, it sure was. I just got back from hanging out with Patrick. I got my 450 yard swim for NAUI DM finished up. I showed him this post and he confirmed the pictures are REAL!!!

WAY TO GO PATRICK.... YOUR NEW NAME IS "DIR JOE"!!!!

I did Cavern/Intro in October (TDI) in doubles and I just finished TDI Cave a couple of weeks ago. To get ready for Cave, I got, and read, the NSS-CDS Cave Manual, the NAUI Cave 1 Manual, the TDI Manual (definitely NOT worth buying), GUE Cave 1 Manual and NACD Cave Manual. As far as I can remember, NONE of those agencies "permit" thirds at the Cavern or Intro level for a diver in doubles. This leads me to wonder about the following statement:

This seems to say the OP was diving doubles at the Intro level and did his dive on thirds. This just doesn't seem right to me.

Now that I've re-read the post, I also wonder about the following
Did you really mean to write "grab on" instead of "OK" the main line? It's my understanding that one should NEVER "grab on" to the main line (or any other).

Or am I just being nitpicky because I'm missing a cat?

Yes rule of 1/6's, sorry... Also, not grabbing but OK'ing and grabbing rocks to propel myself....

How do you know? Have you taken all of them, or at least passed one of them?

I would venture to say that like any other training, it's not the agency, it's the instructor. There are plenty of NACD and NSS-CDS instructors that will kick your butt in Intro or Basic.

The NAUI Cave 1 course is 5 days as compared to 4 for Cavern and Intro. It is more intense, the prerequisites are a lot tougher (must have experience in doubles and/or an "Intro to Tech" rating, be able to back kick, helicopter turn, do valve drills while hovering etc) due to the fact that it's a "recreational cave diving" cert, eg upon successful completion you can dive up to third of your gas, make a couple of navigational decisions, but no deco allowed plus you have to be diving the NAUI Tec gear configuration! I teach NACD, NSS-CDS and NAUI depending on what the student would like..... :)

Safe diving,

Rich
