I don't suppose you had trip insurance or you'd have mentioned it by now, not that that would replace the lost pics.

You hold your cameras as you roll in...?!

A camera was found the same day as I lost mine but I just got word from Christi that it wasnt mine. I want to thank Christi for her efforts in putting the word out there for me. I'd also like to thank the other dive ops she contacted for their help as well.

I would also like to thank the other divers whom I had the pleasure of diving with who have graciously offered to send me images they took during the dives we shared. It means alot. I'll shoot you guys a PM in the next day or so with my email address.

Hi Tundra, First of all, you are defintely NOT a doofus..You are an excellent diver and it was our pleasure to dive with you. You however happen to have had a very unfortunate incident and we know it is very diappointing. Please do email us and we will get to you photos of the trip. If there were any specific shots that we had talked about on the boat that you can remember, please mention them as well as Michael will make sure they are set up for you with special attention.

Thanks again for being such a wonderful dive buddy. We did enjoy our time spent together. Mike and Sue

Maybe there's something new out there, but I've never seen a "trip insurance" policy that would cover the loss of an underwater camera while on a dive...

Insurance such as D.E.P.P. that covers camera equipment loss, theft, flooding, damage, etc. is what you would need. We've got our photo and video cameras, housings, strobes, as well as all our dive gear that we travel with on a D.E.P.P policy. It won't get your photos or video back, but it sure makes the cost of replacing and repairing equipment easier to live with.

Oh man, sorry for your loss. That really went fast. Really nice that everyone is willing to share their pics, gotta love digital

FWIW: I printed our name and phone # with a dymo thingie and stuck it to the inside of the housing...That way I never forget to put it in and it won't slide in front of my lens

Sure, DEPP would be the preferred coverage, but I figured if he had that then these two threads wouldn't even exist. Some would suggest a homeowners insurance claim; I could offer reasons why I wouldn't but will skip that for now. Since we don't know if Tundra_Trog had trip insurance, this is hypothetical - but since you asked, I'll give it a shot...

Of the various reasons I always take low cost trip insurance on international trips, loss by airline (with a $907 or $1250 liability limit for international), porter or driver outside the U.S. are covered in "Baggage and Personal Effects $2,500" coverage. It's not as easy as the consumer might prefer, as the insurance company cannot be easy on "I dropped it so you pay for it" claims, but I'd certainly try for it. I did phone Travelsafe to discuss the likelihood of payments in case I missed something in reading over their provisions, and yep there's coverage - just not as easy to justify as it would be if someone else lost your property. Required: "In case of loss, theft or damage to Baggage and Personal Effects, you must: 1) immediately report the incident to the appropriate local authorities (i.e. local police or other local government authorities) and obtain a written report to include the value and description of the property loss; and/or 2) report the loss to any responsible party (i.e. hotel manager, tour guide or representative, airline, cruise line, bus line or other transport official), and obtain a written report of the loss to include the value and description of the property. We will not pay for further damage if you fail to take reasonable steps to protect your Baggage after a loss." Then there is a $500 maximum payment that can be justified; $500 will not replace this loss, and DEPP would be preferable, but $500 would help.

Do I know anyone who has filed a claim for an item they dropped & lost on a trip? Nope, so far the answer I get to my question has been "No, we didn't buy trip insurance." The two claims I have filed on trip insurance were both paid in full, but they were for trip interruption & delay.

I keep looking at the coil strap you suggested and asking myself if I want to mess with that in addition to everything else I hang off of my BC. Looks like a very good idea.

Don,

I did not have trip insurance nor Do I have DAN or Depp coverage. I have weighed the pros and cons, and felt for this camera it was not worth the expense.

As far as attachment points from Camera to myself, I prefer not to use anything and it is a personal choice I have made and not for everyone. It does however work for me.

Someone also asked if I rolled in with 2 cameras. No, The Captain handed them to me.

SueSue...PM coming your way

:)

I just very much doubt that any travel insurance policy would pay out on a claim for an u/w camera "lost" underwater during a dive... sort of a calculated risk. Stolen off a boat or from a hotel room, maybe.

DEPP is well worth the annual premium and it covers flood, damage, loss, etc or all dive gear, camera and video equipment, even if the reason is user error, poor judgment or just plain bad luck.

Like with any insurance, if the cost of replacement is equal or less to the cost of the premium and any deductible, then it's not worth insuring. That's for everyone to figure out and decide on their own.

Insured or not, Tundra, I hope miracles (and nice, honest people) happen and your camera is found and returned.

Better than a slip of paper, true. Also won't slide around in the way. :thumb: I wrote on my housing and camera with paint sticks: tacky looking but accomplishes what I wanted.

Also going to take a pic of a sign with my name & contact info on each card and protect it. Hehe, easy - just haven't yet.

I appreciate your choice. I won't insure a cell phone, not even for my 15 yo grandson, and many other things some do.

I asked about the roll as you'd said "I started the dive by hopping in with 2 cameras. My wife's and mine." I used to backroll with mine until I popped the seal once. :11:

I generally insure as little as I can feel comfortable about and accept responsibilities for care & loss. Trip insurance is an except for me (detailed resaons in link below): Cheap, comprehensive, worth a shot even with the headaches of claims, all that paperwork.

I'm a huge sceptic of insurance and extended warranties however, we have rider with our homeowners policy that protects our UW camera gear while we're away from home for loss or damage including housings and strobes.... Not just the camera itself. IIRC, it's less than $20 a year and we already filed a claim when I dropped my A95 on the sidewalk. They paid the complete purchase price instead of depreciated replacement value. Well spent money.

Wow Josh! That is a good idea, and great that you had it. I don't insure or extend warranties much either, but that is a great deal to insure your camera anywhere anytime. :thumb:
