I went to Cancun two weeks ago on AA, took my reg, console, comp, mask, camera, housing and strobe all in a duffle and had my laptop in my backpack carried on . no problems with security as far as getting it on the plane.

I also take camera, computer and torches in my carry-on. Remember that batteries should be removed from torches to comply with regulations.

Actually regulations allow for the batteries to remain in the devices. Extra batteries need to be stored so the terminals can not be shorted. This can be done with electrical tape and then just packed so the tape will remain safely in place and undisturbed. The exception to this is large rechargeable cells which may require special handling.

Carry on regulator, computer, log book and camera. Everything else gets checked.

Has anyone had issues with dive weights while flying. My last trip to California the TSA ravaged my bags due to my weights. Scanned them several times and then checked them for explosive material. Then really didn't bothter with the wetsuit or reg set. Just want to know if anyone has came across this.

You packed your weights? I have never packed weights to fly anywhere. Most resorts provide them or you can rent them fairly cheaply when you get there. I wouldn't want to drag them through the airport.

I always carry my reg & computer & camera. Its only been checked once or twice ... by guys who were divers and were curious about my rig! (One wanted to make sure there was no knife on the inflator hose.)

I carry 2, 1 pound ankle weights. The rest I rent.

They will want to inspect and re-inspect anything that contains a lot of lead. I took a lead crystal candy jar through in my carryon once and they went nuts. Scanned it 3 times then wanted a visual inspection. I expect something similar happened with your weights.

And as for the guy who said they would want to see your cert if you put a dive knife in your carryon.... well don't put a knife in your carryon unless you want to donate it to the TSA. They are prohibited, cert or no cert.

BWI to Bahamas last month carried regs, computers cameras, homemade canister light w/ batteries and a 19 cf pony and reg. Didn't even check at BWI. Did elicite a double look when leaving the Bahamas. The female agent was not sure while scanning so asked the supervisor. He knew exactly what it was and could tell the reg. was removed. Asked if i could open my bag to show the female officer what it was and that it was ok.

Taking your dive gear on a business trip: While I always carry on my dive electronics in my laptop bag, the rest goes in the overhead or the belly as my packing for that particular trip warrants. I loath the checked-bag process passionately, so very often all of it goes in the cabin. I often take multi-week, multi-stop trips for business and when there is a stop that has good diving, I plan some down-time and pack my Al BPW and reg with my other personal effects. You can gently fold up a wing and stow it in a luggage pocket such that it takes almost no space. The plate and harness can squash fairly flat on the bottom of your main bag. If you de-hose and cap the ports of your 1st stage, you might be surprised how little space they take. Most 1st stages take up a LOT of space when they are connected to the hoses. You can slide it into a shoe for protection. The hoses run around the perimeter of the luggage taking up dead space in the corners. You can then stash the 2nd stages in the fist-sized recesses that always appear after you pack your clothes and toiletries.

I often take just a 22" rolling bag for two weeks of business attire including my BC and regs! Rent the rest of the dive gear for a few dollars. Most recently, I dragged my BC and regs all over Europe and Africa for just a couple days of diving, but it was so worthwhile to have my own core gear!

I never carry regs on. I carry on cameras, dive computers and laptop. The housing gets checked along with everything else. Just pack carefully and you should not have a problem.

Okay, Dennis. We've (once again) been "outvoted" 15:1 on the check-it-or-carry-it controversy.

Emotion trumps logic in this, the 87th thread on this topic during this century.

:rofl3:

I'm going to pack all my dive gear in a Pelikan explosion proof Case and then carry it on. If it falls out of the overhead bin and kills someone, good thing I stuffed it in someone else's bin up front in the cabin as I walked in.
