That is a good block. Just a heads up though, a valve job on that block is probably 2-3 times as expensive in parts as a Bauer Mariner.

Thanks for the tip Craig. Just out of curiosity, what do you consider to be the best unit out there for affordable service?

Just my two cents of biased advice: Coltri Sub MCH13ET Standard is very often a "best buy" for personal use, at home or "work". It's a slow turning comp with good heat distribution (= plenty weight...) and it practically lasts forever. I'd install an extra HP-drain on it though. As it is, both the HP-drain and the filter drains on the same valve (auto). I would split the two for separate draining, and even install an extra maxi-filter housing on it. No big job if you know what to do. -Sold in the US as other "brands". You'll figure it out ;)

I think that with any machine you are going to have your supporters and your nay-sayers, In my experience with yachts, I find more Bauers than anything else. I believe it is because of world wide distribution and parts availability that chief engineers support Bauer. Coltri now has a distribution facility in Florida under their own name, so parts should nolonger be an issue. I'm still not convinced that Alkin is a reliable machine, they need some more years in the field to gain a track record. I know that Schifauer is trying to gain a foot hold in the US. They are made in the Chechz Republic and are heavy cast iron beasts, but I don't know of many in the field.

Affordable service to me means an excellent supply of parts, landed in the US and a good distribution network. For all the complaining about Bauer prices compare them to Compair. Price is of no concern, if the parts aren't readily available. ;)

Well I guess I shouldn't have anything to worry about Mako then, if I get this unit. I sent an email to Compair about the 5405, and they tell me that parts are very easy to get, and informed me that Compair Canada is only about an hour from my house.

Jimmer,
Why don't you check with Porter at August Industries for parts on that old K-14? When Mako was selling repackaged Bauer Blocks, they used that block and Porter recently bought all the Bauer inventory of that era from Mako.

Craig

I decided to pass on the old K14 for a couple reasons. One was that both Bauer and New Parts/Lawrence Factor tell me parts are hard to find and expensive for that block. The other reason was that the seller originally said it was a 4500psi unit, but when I got more detailed pictures, and information from Bauer when I gave them the block number, it turns out the compressor has a 4500psi final stage pressure gauge, but was only a 3200psi block.
