Papa Bear, you have been all over this board in the last few days, and we have all heard your approach to buddy diving. Not everybody subscribes to the same philosophy. Some of us take the responsibility we assume as dive buddies quite seriously, and one of the biggest resources a buddy can be to another diver is a source of gas when something goes terribly wrong.

We know you don't believe that, and you don't dive that way. It's good information; some people will make their decisions about whether to dive with you based upon it. But please do not disparage those of us who have decided to operate differently. When I get in the water with another diver (or two other divers, as we often dive in trios), I have tacitly agreed to carry reserve gas with me for the use of one or the other of my friends, should it become necessary. We all know that, and we all have made that compact. I believe it is a safer way to dive; others disagree with me. We can all decide how we want to comport ourselves underwater, and choose our companions accordingly. But I don't insult or demean your decision to behave the way you do; don't come down on mine, either, please.

Well let me tell you I have been on the California Dive accident investigation board in the 70's and investigated drownings of single and buddy teams and I will tell you you are advocating the most dangerous behavior in diving! Tell me the agency that teaches what you advocating and I will contact them, because they need to be educated! I will with my experience encourage every diver hold precious their air! Anything else is criminal! Look this isn't playing games this is life or death and at the end of the day I go home! Better one dead diver than two. I have been a public safety diver for a number of years and have done things you can't even imagine! But I will post where I see fit, I notice you have no problem posting as you feel necessary! So maybe you should get an eduction in basic diving before you promote "Give your life to your buddy" type diving! And yes all my potential buddies know my attitude because I discus it before we get wet! If they have a problem go kill yourself and someone else!

It is the inverse of going deeper! It stays the same but it expands as you breath it so you have a much greater volume on the surface, The lack of knowledge of todays divers is amazing! I have made the point to let people know its at pool depth they have a lot of time to surface. I have seen people blow their safety stop because they were below 500psi when all they had to do is relax make the stop and surface! It isn't rocket science it a matter of comfort! What's your point?

My point was just to try to understand your post and the point you were trying to make.

On the one hand you are arguing about the lack of knowledge of todays divers and on the other hand you are arguing that it's not rocket science and no further knowledge is necessary. Which is it?

I actually find the guy incredibly amusing. He is like the personal preference version of GI3.

Like most things in life a little of both! You need basics, simple straight forward and you need to dive! You become a real dive when you have 1000 dives! Believe me nothing is a substitute for experience! It should be kept simple for beginners, but you knowledge should expand as your type of diving does! Diving is Zen! When you are one with the water and dive up fighting it you will know how to dive! You will now the joy of diving at its best! You will have fish come to you and not swim away! You will understand your air consumption and that physics are your friend because you are not fighting the water your body is 85% water and it becomes natural!

All the air in my tank is mine! Period and if I let someone have it I will choose and control it! If you have been taught that get better training! You are not a baby sitter it is your life support not your buddies! If you are diving as a buddy team you turned on the less air tank and you are at 15ft with 500psi of your air! He can suck his tank dry in go up! If you think he needs a little more time give him your backup and when you both run out go up! Why do you and a few here try to make this such a complicated endeavor? A safety stop is just that! I made 1500 dives without one and until the 80s you never heard of such a thing unless you were doing deco dives! It is not a required stop! If my buddy miss judges he needs to learn not to!

I have a bit of a hard time to figure out what exactly you're saying (or trying to). Must be my lacking command of English, so please accept my apologies, if my answer doesn't fit your question.

I am not making this complicated at all. DandyDon asked a question - what reason may there be for the 500 psi or 700 psi "rule" - and I gave my opinion (or made a guess, if you prefer).

So what's all your ranting about, and the uncalled for "get better training" remark?

"All the air in your tank is yours", and "if you let someone have it you will choose and control it!"? I really hope that your buddies (assuming you do have buddies), if they happen to have a 1st stage malfunction and are out of air, are deemed worthy to receive some of "your air", and you still have some of "your air" left to share (if you are so inclined).

Ahhhh...to be in the presence of the one true dive god.

I say...Hallelujah

Well your lack of experience is showing! I decide based on if your in control and if your calm! I would rather drag you to the surface and resuscitate you than kill myself with a panicked diver! In life guarding you are taught to take a drowning victim down until they submit. I don't know your level of training! So if I am low and your out we do an emergency accent! I will control the air! If I am in control I will decide all the management of your rescue! It is the price you pay for using all your air up! I have investigated dead buddies who died struggling over the rescuers regulator! So before you charge in and give someone that was not trained like you YOUR AIR!

And when you have a 1000 dives speak up Mr. 100 to 199 been diving a year! Glad your getting entertained I hope you get educated!

I understand now. You just like to hear yourself talk! Got it.:D

It is most certainly the anti GI3.
