Its modern form may have orginated in coffee houses of England in the 16th century and the word "tip" itself was just short for "To Insure Promptitude".
This has been debunked a million times over. It's just not true.

now if the DM helps you in and out of the water
...doubt this will happen...
It looks like there are two classes of divers on a US dive boat if you're a DM
Good divers-tip well
Bad divers-lousy tippers
Do you tip a waiter in a restaurant?
99.9% of the time...... nope
but in saying that - we dont eat out alot because my cooking is gooodddddd![]()
Oh, I can assure you that if you come diving here in NJ I will be able to assemble a line of Boat Captains, DMs, and Deck Hands a mile long, everyone of whom will be willing to help you into the water for free. Of course the boat might be doing 20kts on the way back to the dock at the time...

Let me take a wild guess here: I'm betting you don't get very good service in restaurants either, huh?
You seem to get just absolutely gawd-awful service from everyone, everywhere, all the time, no matter where in the world you dive. I dunno, but it if were me I would think that at some point I would notice that the ONLY thing that all of my bad experiences with other people had in common was ME.
ok - in seriousness - YES, i have been known to tip but i wont do it just because i have to, because its a local custom, because its expected
........Unfortunately, in professions where tipping is customary employers are allowed to pay less than minimum wage to their staff - AND - the staff is taxed on the tips it is assumed they make. So - when the employer pays $5.41 per hour (in a non-tipping profession the minimum wage is $7.65), the wait staff is still presumptively taxed as if they actually received their hourly wages + their share of 8% of the restaurant sales. (It is reported as income on their annual tax form to the IRS and they must prove they did not receive that much in tips - or pay taxes on it.)
........
now, how does teh above affect a DM? if he is diving for free fills and boat trip does he get taxed on that?
