Galapagos national park officials have announced 53 sea lions including 13 pups have been found dead with their skulls crushed.

Really very sad news. I can't help but think this must be related to perceived competition on the part of fishermen.

How can anyone do this just for the fun of it? I don't understand.

Some fishers in our waters still shoot at them. I have a picture of four of them dead on one of their hauling out rocks... the rocks were dripping with their blood. I've included one of the pix below. Disgusting.

I thought Galapagos was a protected area?? Am I wrong about that?

Are you really this naive?

So does that mean it isn't protected? Or does it mean the authorities on Galapagos refuse to enforce their own laws? I've never been there so I really don't know all the politics of the region.

Sure it's protected. Just because it's protected doesn't mean people will follow laws. And enforcing laws is usually easier said than done. Especially in remote areas and with third world countries who are more worried about their poor people eating than any animal out in the boondocks.
