Once again, attacking the poster and not the post. Should the fact I am not a contributing member mean I can't state my opinion?
I think the Mods have been asked to not post here any more than absolutely necessary, so while I cannot speak for the manager, let me suggest: Supporting Membership is optional, it does not alter the importance of your opinion. Don't worry about such remark...
If you're nutless enough to post anonymously, you get to say 4 letter words?? What gives?
That's where I saw it. Guess that was a glitch in added the Anony option. I am really sure it was not intentional.

It is absolutely NOT necessary to be a supporting member to say what you want. I only pointed out that if someone feels this strongly about something, they should support it. I believe in this board and I believe in the right to free speech. There are areas on this board specifically designed for that. You tell me Don. why is there an 18 YO old requirement for opt in for SI? I may not agree with your opinion, but I respect your right to express it. People have fought and died for that right. People are fighting for it as we speak. If something offends you, don't read it. But please respect that individuals right to say it.

The words of individuals on a privately owned/operated board have nothing to do with the First Amendment. NetDoc can suppress all the ideas he wants because the First Amendment doesn't apply. That being said, I agree with Jep because in my opinion a loosening-up of ScubaBoard will attract more people than it will scare off. This is a community for divers to come together. While it only makes sense that diving should be discussed, why not allow other topics to be discussed? While I actually personally know very few people on this board, there are quite a few people who I feel like I know pretty well from reading their posts for the last couple of years. Why should I not have an opportunity, on ScubaBoard, to discuss other issues with these people? As for the language issue, if you cannot handle the occasional curse word, well, loosen up. Oh, and I was a paying member but I had to stop so I could see the KISS ad everyone as talking about.

We have something to work with here......
As an old coot, you should remember an archaic idea that we used to call the first ammendment. You may also remember a time when people were able to take personal responsibility for themselves.
People could change the channel if they didn't like something. Today everyone expects someone else to tell them what is okay or change the channel for them. Kind of says a lot about our culture and the American spirit, huh? It's pretty bad that 90% of all recently enacted laws are designed to protect stupid people from themselves. It is also ashame that the government can take away so many personal rights under the pretense of "homeland security". It is an absolute travesty that Russian citizens now have more rights than we do. But hey, if people are more comfortable letting other people tell them what is right or wrong, I guess it makes sense. Too bad we didnt become so lacsidasical 200+ years ago. We could have saved ourselves the headache of forming a new country and laws that had civil and religious rights as a priority

In the good ole days, the FCC and the network had far greater censorship than today. I wonder, given yesterday's questionable elections electing an overwhelming majority of Czar Putin's chronies to their parliment -- using state funded advertising for Putin's team and against eh opposition, whether the Russian citizens feel like the have more rights than we do.

I don't disagree that laws of gone out of control because people don't take personal accountablity. In the archiac days ( when our Constitution was written ) , if a man insulted a lady -- there was a duel. Profanity was not perceived as 'adult language' it was spoken by the uncooth and lower class. Upper and middle class had manners, was polite, and didn't speak of the big three 'religion, women, and politics'. Today, we have to accept everyone's right to express themselves....as there is no self discipline in knowing what is proper conduct.

The internal 'red flags' that we used to use to self-censor are largely gone in public (except where you might find yourself assaulted) and completely gone on the internet.

So I ask, WHEN did profanity or sexual innuendo become equivalent to acceptable adult language? WHEN did it become proper/appropriate to discuss any and all matters -- regardless of context? WHEN did it become appropriate for a quid pro quo display of scantly clad men to somehow appease women who are offended by (relative) female nudity?

As one of my nephews remarked at Thanksgiving Dinner, his generation of the 20-somethings are very immature. There are few limits SELF-IMPOSED.

Perhaps the lack of self-emposed limits (by corporations or individuals [who run corporations]) is the REASON why BIG GOVERMENT is interceding? This applies at a macro level in the US ( I can't speak for other countries ) or at a micro level on SB.

No, it doesn't have to (and probably shouldn't) mean "anything goes." What it does mean is that it provides a place for some of us to continue building the comraderie that was built over diving.
Ding ding ding. I think this is what a few people are trying to get across.

See, I can use bold and be aggressive towards other people too. Aren't I clever?
I didnt see that he was being aggressive...merely trying to put emphasis on certain words. Chill out dude.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

OK gentlemen,

this thread is for the exchange of viewpoints and opinions, not for trading insults.

Please keep it civil.
That is IMHO exactly one of the things OP is pointing out. Personally I respect El Orans and respectfully say; it is BS to reprimand those comments. If the posters felt attacked they can go complain to their mommy. Geesh. One of the joys of the internet is one can brandish a weapon at their computer monitor all they want with out fear a worse lunatic gets medieval proactively :censored:.

I’m not sure how the Original Post got sidetracked into Bikinis, but thanks to the obsessed person that whizzed right over somewhere there and let me know what I was missing. I would have never thought to go there, look for it and remain not caring one iota it existed, exists?
And this too demonstrates exactly (IMHO) what the OP presents:
  • I had no interest in seeing photographs of women in bikinis nor problem with another human being having a different opinion.
  • I was presented with the information, could have been a link (don’t remember) to get there.
  • I continued to have no interest in seeing photographs of women in bikinis.
  • I didn’t really care to read descriptions of photographs of women in bikinis but the person taking the trouble to provide updates of what they found offensive was comical enough to elicit a chortle as I scrolled past them.
  • Then the bikini bit and scrolling got boring so I paid my bills, that’s how boring it was.
  • When finished paying bills I returned to new posts and saw a number of additions and clicked into the thread hoping for a little more light entertainment before going to bed.
There is only so much I’m willing to be protected, I just can’t get past feeling I’m able to think for myself and responsible for my own actions. I didn’t want to see something other people found offensive or enjoyable and had no problem not going to look. I’m surprised there are people who feel so easily drawn to things they don’t want to read or see. No one prevented me, really, it was easy. I didn’t care to. This up in arms attitude is mystifying; ‘get a grip’ comes to mind.

This is not about women in bikinis, the armpit of degradation or whatever loathsome thing some seem to envision. I see it as a request for the opportunity to socialize as one would in person with other adults around the world, picking and choosing from ongoing conversations, topics and…well whatever strikes our fancy. It seems quite simple to me, if we are not interested we don’t partake.

If someones post-balance is tipped too far in the ****-direction, just ignore them and be done with it...I don´t care about bikini´s and felt that the "kiss ad debate" was plain silly so after I´d read the OP in that thread I just kept scrolling by it as it grew...I do the same with some of the forums...I just don´t see the problem...any employer who cares how I waste my time at work but not that I do really needs to get it´s act together, IMO...

This is a scubaboard but I find a lot of the OT-threads interesting, not only because of the subject matter but because I have a basic respect for most of the people posting in them (if nothing else at least they are divers) so I participate and read threads here that I wouldn´t waste my time on elsewhere precisely because this is a scubaboard...

The PC-ness sometimes irritates the hell out of me (wonder if that get´s thru?)

Instead of writing "when the **** hits the fan" people write "when fecal matter hits the rotating...", people type "caca" instead of "****", ****** instead of ****...if **** is disallowed then all synonyms should be as well, otherwise it just becomes a competition for who has the best thesaurus and encourages backstabbing rather than "honest" confrontation...

It becomes a contest in who can write what without getting modded, goading and comments that dismiss other peoples oppinions as "beneath notice" without being blatantly rude...It just seems as if calling someone an ******* is a more efficient way of communication than suggesting that someone has a strong hint of equine decent in their posterior...allow both or none...

Oh, and I was a paying member but I had to stop so I could see the KISS ad everyone as talking about.
I don't think you had to stop. I think there is an option, I just never did.
