Recently, ScubaBoard has added some new functions which you may have noticed. Included in these enhancements are:

1. Social Bookmarking - There are 2 links at the bottom of each post one is to "del.icio.us" (del.icio.us) "Everything posted to del.icio.us is publicly viewable by default, although a user can mark specific bookmarks as private, and imported bookmarks are private by default." Users can sign up for a del.icio.us account there, and save bookmarks of favorite, or interesting posts there.
We are also linking to "digg" (Digg / All News & Videos) which is basically the same thing.

Social Bookmark Links are ONLY available in publicly accessible forums. Some of the sub forums will not have the links to the social bookmarks, as they are not readable by "guests"

2. Multi-Quote has been enabled in all forums. You use multi quote by clicking on the "M-Quote" button - this will change the color of the button to RED. You click "M-Quote" on several posts, and then click "QUOTE" and all of the posts that you've selected will be quoted in your reply.

There's still more to come from your support staff at ScubaBoard.com - we hope you all are enjoying the new features and look to the site.

Thanks again for your continued support!

I love the multi-quote! I'm going to run use it right away. Thank you!!!

I am unclear about what it means to be "public" with the social bookmarking.

Does that mean that anyone on the internet can access it, as well as people already on ScubaBoard?

So if I mark one of my posts as "private", it won't show up on a standard internet search?

Or is this just an option to copy/paste SB postings into "Delicious" ?

Delicious lets you store your bookmarks on the web vs. the Favorites folder on your hard drive. So you can get to it anywhere, really from any computer (depending on how locked down your IT dept at work may have things). The thing is, by default, your favorites are searchable by other people. The thinking is that a website that is "favorited" (is that even a word?) a number of times is more valuable in a search than the Google method where people regularly game the system to show up in the first couple of pages in a websearch. Additionally, the thinking is that if you have something favorited (there I go again!) in Delicious that I'm interested in, then your other favorites might also be worth investigating. Its not exactly clear how "private" your private favorites really are, btw. Or how much of your web traffic patterns are being saved and how identifiable your web surfing is or isn't.

Digg is a completely different story. Much of what might get dugg from SB is considered to be a variant of blogspam and most of the target audience there aren't divers anyway. There have been similar sites eventually blacklisted. I'm not sure where the synergy is, but its not my decision so we'll just see how it goes. It does stand to drive more traffic to SB, but I can't imagine it would be SB material (i.e. divers or potential dive students)...

To clarify. Nothing is automatically posted to anywhere. Users click on the links themselves to add bookmarks to specific threads.

You will notice also that some forums don't have the icons to digg or delicious the post. That is because those forums are not viewable by "guests" to the forum. Only public forums are able to be bookmarked this way.

AFAIK there is no "private" bookmark on delicious or Digg (but I could be wrong). I haven't delved into either THAT much to see, but have looked and certainly can't find . Either way. You can't bookmark a PM. Nobody can see your PM's or other Private info without a password. Also, guests can not see private opt in forums without being a registered user of that forum (So Cal DIR, Solo Divers, Surface Interval, etc) if people (guests) try to view one of these posts, they'll get an "unauthorized" message.

I hope this answers the questions :)

One other social bookmarking feature has been added. It is called [wiki]Furl[/wiki]
