There are a lot of people on both sides of the fence with a bad taste in their mouth regarding the "opposing camp."

I spend a fair amount of the time discussing reasons why I chose a DIR path.

There are many who choose NOT.

This is an opportunity for them to discuss things they are opposed to in the DIR style and open up the discussion for the reasons why.

Perhaps, but per the terms of this forum, it is not the place for it.

Why I'm not DIR....because I dive solo...because I dive air deeper than they recommend....because I dive unplanned dives and just jump in, go down and see what's there and would probably deviate from said plan if I saw something little deeper that I wanted to check out....call me a stroke. I don't care really.
Even if I DID want to be DIR, I'd never dive. I can't find ONE dive buddy most times let alone two....because I live in the middle of fricken nowhere. And, I'll never dive caves or wrecks so a lot of the ideas won't apply...many will but not all. I don't like going in caves on dry land much less under water.

My basic problem with DIR is their dedicated to the proposition that one size fits all, that one solution is optimum for all situations and all tasks. In my experience that just is not so.

Their dedication to this goes beyond the issue of (as Lynne put it) "made choices, and sometimes they chose among multiple acceptable alternatives." Because on occasion they made the wrong choices, and have despite having it pointed out, have stuck with it.

Exactly. I have absolutely NO chance of finding a DIR buddy around here, and so much of what I see is often so mickey mouse that I'd probably just stop diving completely in disgust.

It's exactly the same reason that I never did Advanced Nitrox or other deco/tech training. Can't get the buddies, can't get the gasses, don't have the sites.

Correct me if I'm wrong Cave Diver,

Being DIR, do you have to "have" certain equipment such as:

1. double tanks
2. Jet fins
3. Octopus hose that wraps around your neck
4. Drysuit

As for training, I heard thats another story and it looks more stricter then Padi or Naui guideline for diving. Otherwise, I'm confused :confused2 otherwise, I've had run-ins with mean people who "claim" to be DIR but are in fact, mr. know-it-all. Unlike you C.D. :eyebrow:
