Has anyone been to Almar yet? I saw a post about it on Facebook. It is located next to Portasol (used to be Rolandi's) in the same location where Margaritaville used to be. I'm glad they've remodeled this place as it was abandoned for as long as I can remember.

Double post. Sorry.

Back when we came more frequently, one of our favorites was El Moro. How is that these days?

John,
My wife and I tried El Moro back in May of this year, but it was not our favorite. I suspect we hit it on an off day, because it has always seemed to be on the "must go" list.

So I came here looking for restaurant advice, and I find a discussion on the Pub. The noted drop in interest in this forum is by no means unique--it is happening in forums all over ScubaBoard. I created the Rocky Mountain forum a couple decades ago, and for a while it was hopping. It is now almost completely dead. The Instructor to instructor forum hasn't had a decent discussion in years.

Unhappy with ScubaBoard, I sought out an alternative. All the diving forums like this are pretty much dead. As lifeless as this may seem, it is almost the only game in town for scuba discussions.

The same seems to be true for Cozumel restaurants. I have not been to the scene in a long time, and I'm stunned. We ate at La Mission tonight. We were the only ones in there the entire time we were there.

The last couple of months have been dead in Cozumel - that’s what I’ve been told by people who live there. I’m hoping it picks up in October/November. Not sure why it’s so bad - economy?

And yes, it seems that most of the forums here are gasping for air. There was a time when the women’s perspectives forum was hopping and so much fun. Not so much now. But I’m on several scuba facebook pages that are very active - for women, for divers over 50, etc. Lots of activity. Can’t say if it’s the poor attitude here or it’s just run its course. I miss the ‘old’ days - and it wasn’t that long ago really.

Last couple of times we were in Cozumel we stayed at Dreams (terrible - I can’t say enough terrible things about it) and Explorean (can’t say enough good things about it). But that means we didn’t go to Centro, so I can’t say much about that either. Next time we’ll be staying at Suites Colonial and will be at all the local haunts. I’ll report back. :)

Btw, even the roll calls are bleak. :(

It seems that Guido's is always busy. I think most of the customers, it is a tradition. In Feb., we went to Buccanos for dinner. It is one of the pricier places on the island, but not as bad as I had anticipated. Worth it for the ambience. They do sell day time beach club passes. $400 mx pesos which is applied toward your food and drink. Next time I am on the island, I think that is how I will spend an afternoon. No loud music, vendors or jet skis. Cielito Lindo was good, but not up to their usual quality during our last visit.

When we went to El Moro last April - May, it was the same as it ever was - great food and excellent service. Ray has gained a little weight. :D

We used to go there back when it was the Acuario restaurant; the food was OK but we really liked the ambiance and their Spanish/Mayan/Mexican coffee performances. I have not been into the building since then, but it is a great location for a restaurant.

Google does not return a result for "Almar Cozumel"; are you sure that is what it is called?

Aside: What Google does return is a bunch of hits for Ventanas al Mar, the east side hotel (the only hotel over there) that is right next to Coconuts. Apparently it is open again.

It seems to me that many of the 'go-to' restaurants have dropped down a notch or two. Maybe just the effect of large increased costs since Covid - IDK? We still enjoy most of them but categorially, they don't seem to be quite as good as they once were. Even El Moro seems to have dropped a notch but is still very high on our favorites list.

I don't know how many of the restaurants stay in business. Seems like when we go out, there are very few have many customers except for places like Guido's or Bucannos. The fancy upscale places (Bajau, La Inombrable, etc.) popping up along Melgar don't 'seem' to be too busy either. We've tried them once but were not impressed and seem out of place in Cozumel.

I've attached my list of restaurants, By no means is it 100% accurate. In Cozumel, the restaurant landscape changes in a short period of time

Last few times I ate at La Mission, we've been eaten alive by mosquitos. Love the place but if I cant enjoy my meal while being a meal myself, I just go to Casa Mission. Never an issue there.

I apply repellent to my legs when that happens. Many Cozumel restaurants use the old green mosquito coils that we used to burn on summer nights at drive-in theaters in Louisiana when I was a kid, but I really don't like them around me when I am trying to enjoy a meal.
