on a boat like that.
From the picture it looks like double engines. Distance is roughly 360nm and a guess of 800 gallons of gas which means they would need deck floor fuel bladders and way overloaded on weight. Couple of waves over the bow and a stock bilge couldn't keep up. No articles have mentioned an Eprib signal received by CG either.

Could have they planned on refueling once or twice on Cuba? Even if so, it looks like an ill-conceived plan to me.

I would never have undertaken such a voyage on a boat like that.
I know a few people who have done it on similar sized boats. Thats a crazy voyage. They bring those boats down to Cancun to be used for tours. You should see how many foreign registered boats at Playa Norte on isla Mujeres that are being used for tourism. Couple guys I know brought a 60 foot boat ( $1000000) down that belonged to someone in the mx govt. He flew them to Cuba on his jet to get the boat after it was driven down from Florida. It took them 3 days in that.

Years ago my sister and brother-in-law considered bringing their 65+ foot diesel Egg Harbor across from New Orleans to Cozumel, but besides the fuel considerations they found some reports of piracy occurrences out in the Gulf of Mexico, so they abandoned the idea.

How hard is it to stay in your lane...??

Since it was rental vehicle, and a jeep, im thinking mechanical failure. They do zero maintenance on rentals here. Jeeps are horrible suspensions and most wobble when you drive them. I have one so I know all about their quirks. Almost every year a jeep will burn on the highway here....

There used to be a statue and/or marker at the edge of the parking area between Mescalito's and Señor Iguana's that was directly in line with the road from the other side of the island. It's not there any more.
