um, I googled. Diveassure
the very first listing was a sponsored one of course, but it was DAN.
That's some sneaky stuff right there! Kinda puts a bad taste in my mouth for DAN

It's called marketing. You seemed to think DAN isn't allowed to market their products and services. Why?

yeah...but there's honest marketing....
showing how their product is great
or showing how their product is better than others (although that can easily trip over into defamation or other not-so-nice things)
or even showing some sort of thing that makes me want their product even though I'm not even looking for one of those things..

and then there's crooked marketing
But that's more like spoofing. If I hadn't been careful, I'd have clicked that link thinking that I was clicking to Diveassure...
It smells like deception to me.

That's not crooked marketing. That is smart marketing. Someone does a search on a competitor, and you pay Google a fee for yours to come up as a sponsored link at the top. That's being smart, not crooked. Being crooked would be to spoof a url that looks like it is going to your competitor, but it really goes to your site. Sponsored marketing links appear in Google ALL THE TIME. We should be used to it by now. Plus, the link will go to a website very clearly branded as DAN. I don't see it being crooked at all. It's just how modern social media marketing works. YMMV. If you don't want to get DAN insurance, then don't. But it's simply not crooked marketing.

look again at the screenshot I posted.... post 39!

yes....The big letters that spell out "Dive Assure Insurance"
yeah... click that and it takes you to DAN's web site.

You can see my search term
so a person would look past that sponsored thing that says'
Divers Alert Network DAN
we're all used to seeing those things come up at the top of the list....
then the very first thing you see is almost exactly my search term. Great, I found it..... ah, nope.

Yeah, that's smart marketing! Makes me really want to take a look at Diveassure instead of DAN.
I'm pretty much neutral about most things but that makes me want to go out of my way to NOT give DAN any more of my money!

Feel free to do that. Makes no difference to me. But I think you’re being extremely naive. To each their own.

I’ve had no issues finding DiveAssure. More than likely it has to do with Google’s complex algorithm and their monetization of that instead of DAN being crooked.

Yep, the blue link says Dive Assure....but it is very clearly shown as a DAN website you are going to.
Maybe you need to slow down, not jump to conclusions, and chill.

But I think you’re being extremely naive
Oh no...something entirely different. You couldn't be more wrong. Naive implies not knowing. I know all too well that there are unscrupulous folks in the world. Some people do bad things, & some folks accept bad behaviour. My reaction has much more to do with wanting...or even expecting... or maybe hoping is a better word...for good morals and ethics. I know all too well that different folks accept different levels and have different understandings of right and wrong...and some folks accept poor ethics
More than likely it has to do with Google’s complex algorithm and their monetization of that instead of DAN being crooked.
And yes, I fully assume that DAN, as a collective, probably didn't design what's posted there... and a lot of them wouldn't even condone it. It's more than likely a result of the algorithms, many many layers of marketing folks clicking boxes, etc.
But that said, it doesn't make it right.

and on another note...
The reason I'm interested in this thread.
Getting back into diving, and bringing my family along.
So thinking about insurance coverage for our upcoming dive trip (and for future potential dives)

So I asked my insurance guy at work to confirm if there are any exclusions for SCUBA or hyperbaric therapy.
The answer is that there are no exclusions and chamber rides are specifically covered for a long list of things. SCUBA isn't mentioned, but embolisms are on the list

This insurance I get through work isn't the best.... It's only in network in my home state of FL and doesn't have good coverage for out-of-network docs. It covers emergencies out of state, but not non-emergent stuff...so that opens up a HUGE grey area for a lot of things.
But it seems that I don't absolutely need dive insurance in the state of FL, and probably don't need it out of state...but there may be a need to pay for transport to get to a network provider and other hassles where it might be helpful.

I'm thinking that where I would absolutely want supplemental dive insurance is international travel.
And probably also if/when we start doing more challenging and deeper diving

DAN covers OW to 40m or PADI recreational depth limits. Dive Assure only insures you to the training depth for the certification. So Padi OW is 18m under Dive Assure.

DAN covers you incountry as long as your dive is more than 50 miles from where you live.
