Is "too much wing" bad? I mean, it seems like if I need a 30 lb wing but I see a used 45 lb wing and backplate setup that looks well-maintained and is a quality brand like Halcyon or OMS or Dive Rite- I should grab it, no? Would I be messing up?

Yes, too much wing is not a good thing.You won't put a lot of air in a bigger wing, so it will be floppy and will fold around your tank and trap air. You need a smaller narrow wing so it won't do that. Search through some of the posts in the Buoyancy Compensators (BC's) & Weight Systems section here for additional advice.
Halcyon is good but is over priced. Dive Rite is a good solid company that has been in business for along time.
I have a Sub Gravity Paragon singletank BP/W.
I would look at Dive Gear Express, you could probably get a brand new one for the price of a used Halcyon.DGX Custom - DGX Gears Singles Harness / Backplate / Wing Package

Thank you for that OWD!!! Is there much love around here for the HOG package? I will absolutely check out the BC forum!!

HOG makes decent gear. I would not get the 32lb bungee wing though, the bungee's are on the outside of the wing and are an entanglement hazard. HOG 32lb 360 Bungee Wing Black and Red. There's nothing saying you can't mix & match the components.
You won't find a better bang for your buck than the DGX BP/W package, a lot of divers on here recommend it or own one.

Good location. A good buddy of mine that I have dived with MANY times lives in Defiance. He used to be active here on SB but I only see him on FB these days.

You can easily reach Gilboa (which is my all time favorite quarry) and White Star (also good) but also Lakes Huron and Erie within a very manageable drive.

There was a time that the Great Lakes Wrecking Crew forum here on SB was super active. It was right around the time I started diving in late 2005. Its heyday was probably 2006-2010. We used to do a spring and fall Meet & Greet. All of the primary folks who coordinated those gatherings have gone their separate ways and at least one key figure passed away very tragically. Man those were the days. I really cut my teeth as a diver with that group from 2006-2012 or so. Fantastic memories but unfortunately that is in the past.

For local [NW Ohio] diving, start with White Star, progress to Gilboa and then, in a couple of seasons - following AOW, Rescue, Nitrox, Dry Suit and Deep training, you can try Huron. Port Sanilac has not only the Regina, but also the Mary Alice B. one of my favorites as it is resting upright at 90' and altough just a tug boat, has all the bells and whistles you could want in a wreck [ship's wheel, cupboards full of china, etc.] In the meantime, go to the Caribbean and hit Utila, Roatan, Belize, Cozumel and a few other spots. Warm water is very different than cold water diving and you should try both.

The only issue with this plan is that it will take a long time before I get to Lake Huron. I mean, I'm old- I could be dead by then. I think I've seen video of the Mary Alice B. and it sounds absolutely amazing!!!

@HamTrainChickenLaser,

I just read through this thread. Let me add this: I learned to dive in MO freshwater lakes in the late 1980's. We wore a 0.25" FJ and jacket, and bibbed hood, booties, and gloves or mitts--because it didn't take much depth at all before we were diving below the second thermocline. When I first moved to Ann Arbor MI in the early 1990's, I would drive down to Gilboa and White Star and dive wearing the same exposure wear that I wore in MO. These were relatively short-duration, recreational dives to shallow-moderate depths. No problem whatsoever.

Of course, I was used to diving in all the bulk that's required to dive colder water.

You won't know until you dive in colder water, that you actually like it. The shallow side of Gilboa is probably still a great place to sample this type of diving. My advice: Don't buy any gear for this type of diving until you've tried this type of diving.

P.S. Only when I began training to dive deeper, longer exposures did I purchase a (custom) drysuit. (A wetsuit loses more and more of its ability to insulate as you dive deeper.)
