Hi folks, this is what i own, and i am wondering if there is something wrong with my regulator.

My zeagle breathes extremely well and dry when i am on descent and when i am in the usual horizontal diving position at depts up till 140ft.

However whenever i upright myself from this horizontal position, the breathing suddenly becomes very heavy, obviously more difficult than in the horizontal position.

My hose is longer than usual (because my alternate air is an inflator/octo).

Is there anything wrong?

URS,

It's completely normal for any regulator to breathe substantially poorer when a diver is upright or leaning back slightly. It has nothing to do with your hose length. The fact that your regulator breathes extremely well when in an normal position just makes it more noticeable than it would be with a regulator that normally breathes like a dog.

Here's why:
When in this position the diver has to pull the air down about 1.5 feet or more from the second stage, which is above his face, to his chest level, in order to expand his lungs. There is a about a .5 psi change in pressure per foot. Let's assume the average diver's chest area is about one square foot, (144 sq. in.) that's about 108 lbs of extra water weight on your chest when in this position. (1.5 x .5 = .75 x 144 = 108.)
This is why a hose or long snorkel won't work at all below about 2 to 3 feet.

When in a normal position the second stage is at the same level as the chest so it's very easy breathing.
