Hi

due to another thread that got sidetracked (& a bit heated:wacko: ) I just want to see what the opinion is from a more medical point of view on the safety of young divers. So here are a few questions.

1. What is the youngest age that it is safe to start SCUBA diving?
1.1 Why?

2. Should a Young SCUBA diver be limited to shallower depths upto a certain age?
2.1 What Age?
2.2 What Depth?
2.3 Why?

3. What age would you consider a person to be fully developed phisicaly in the sense of scuba diving?
4. are any of these answers different for males & females?

cheers

As yours is an inquiry of a medical nature and extends well beyond "the scientific aspects of decompression," the focus of the Ask Dr Decompression forum, I have taken the liberty of moving it here.

There are no cut & dried answers to these questions, but you might find the following article a good orientation by which to guide such decisions.

The Minds and Bodies of Children -- are they really suited to scuba?

http://www.undercurrent.org/UCnow/articles/Kids200109.shtml

You'll also find it, plus several other articles on the topic, on Scubadoc's website under "Diving Teens" http://www.scuba-doc.com/teens.htm . The peice by Dr. Larry Taylor, while a bit chaotic and satiric, is quite good.

Best regards.
