"Zetas" extortionists appear

COZUMEL, Jan. 19 .- Violence unleashed in Cancun and Playa del Carmen has had side effects in Cozumel, where crime is causing fear, especially in downtown hotels. It is known of one in which two hooded criminals arrived saying to be of the criminal group of "The Zetas", informing to the attendant that from now on they will pay a right of floor or everything is finished.
It was known from credible sources that they requested the anonymity of the attempt of extortion, by delinquents, who affirmed to be of the criminal group of "Zetas" against the person in charge of the hotel "Kary" located on 25 South Street with Adolfo Rosado Rooms of the colony Center.
According to information, and which Public Safety tried to hide, in order to not show the faulty work they are doing, was that around 1:30 am on Thursday, two people arrived on board a motorcycle model Bross, to the Entrance of this business against the corner of the municipal market.
It is said that both were hooded and when they went down they went directly against the manager of the reception, who was sitting at the door of the hotel at that time of the night. They forced him in by threatening him with a metal tube they carried. Once he was with his back to the two subjects he was struck on one side, and then he was given the order to show them the log book, at the same time he was asked how much cash he had in the box.
The frightened employee replied that there were 1,500 pesos, which he was told was not possible because it was a hotel that generally has good occupation, and they left a leaf in which they said they were members of "Los Zetas" And that the visit was intended to give them a notice to pay a floor right or "will load the dick, since the Zetas have arrived and have to catch up and have to put their part or everything will end "He quoted verbatim.
The sources revealed that the employee was forced to telephone the owner so that the criminals told him the same thing, although they hung up the phone. Minutes later, the owner dialed the reception desk, but when no one answered, he told 911 that he sent patrols to the scene.
They did not answer the owner, because the criminals left when they saw a person on a motorcycle in front of the hotel and the employee shouted for help, that's when they got out and started the vehicle in which they arrived and escaped on 25 South.
Then the employee ran to the corner where the market is and did not want to return to the hotel for fear, until when he saw the police came back and told what happened.
Something that surprised the victim is that he saw the two criminals pass again a block away and a few minutes later received messages from these subjects a telephone number with Lada 984 (from the city of Chetumal), claiming that he has spoken To the police and threatened to harm his family because they know where he lives and they were dialing his wife's phone, but it was off.
At the time of the incident, there was no one on that street because there was no commercial activity, not even municipal police patrol. Those affected went to the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Common Jurisdiction to denounce, however, they did not and they retired, probably out of fear.
Apparently there were two other hotels visited in the same way, according to the municipal police who arrived at "Kary", because at the same time they received two more reports without mentioning more details. A policeman stayed at the hotel to provide protection, but nothing happened.
It should be noted that Public Safety is simply an institution that is inoperative due to the lack of capacity of its director, Raúl Sánchez Martínez, to provide security for citizens, shops, and even downtown hoteliers.

And this:

Disloyal watchman stole the synagogue

COZUMEL, January 19 - One of the employees of security company "Multiserv" was detected by security cameras of the Israeli synagogue removing electronic devices, which forced him to return them. This element is one of the contracted by the government of Perla Tun Pech, in the collective agreement signed with that company to carry out work of police.
It was just a few weeks ago that Perla Tun Pech had the idea of hiring these private security guards, in the absence of police, without remembering that if there are missing police it is because she ran to several, including 15 cadets, while asserting that no There is money in the town hall, action out of all logic.
Now it was unofficially aired, that on January 5, a fact that was tried to hide to avoid the media impact and something that had not happened in the Israeli synagogue in Cozumel, whose headquarters is in the highlands of The Plaza del Sol, in front of the central park "Benito Juárez".
It became known that on that day, around 9 in the morning, one of the rabbis arrived to the place and upon entering he realized that he needed an iPad device, a cell phone and the amount of one thousand pesos, which they had left in A restaurant area that they have at their disposal.
The data refer that the rabbi consulted with the security cameras they have in the interior and it is when he discovered that a private security element of the said company entered the place and seized the apparatuses and then leave with them, apparently by the early morning.
It was made known to the Tourist Police that has its base in the Plaza del Sol and asked the element to go and found that he removed the above, he was asked to return it, which was why he did not appear the complaint.
These elements of private security were contracted to make it police, without being, taking care of a series of municipal public buildings, paying the city council a service for each of these agents without police training.
It is worth mentioning that the synagogue door was left open so that the tourist police could enter for some coffee during the nights, and now the trust was violated by a private security officer who does not know what happened to him.
With this, the government of Tun Pech is evident, that without valid arguments hired these agents when the police could do the surveillance work but she fired at least 21 policemen if not more.

Some said "never say never"

very wise person

I've got a headache from trying to reverse engineer the translation. But I think I get the gist.

Naive question: is that actually how the Zetas roll, or is that just how local idiots trying to pretend they're tough guys from off-island roll?

Would someone be THAT stupid? Seems like a sure fire way to loose ones head if you ask me.

Ask the guy whose body was found a few weeks ago in the bushes on the east side with two bullet holes in the back of his head if it was pretend.

Cozumel is a very safe place. My only point was that just because visitors don't see much crime doesn't mean that there are no problems. Again, these have little to no effect on visitors and people who exercise common sense.

There is no point in discussing local problems that are very likely worse in our home towns. There is more crime, gang activity, drugs and violence here in Minneapolis than there will ever be in Coz.

It's great to bury your toes in the sand, just don't bury your head in the sand when it comes to your safety anywhere you go.

Utopia does not exist; there are people everywhere who would rather take what they want from others rather than earn a legitimate living. Cozumel does very well in keeping that sort of thing at bay, but no place is perfect and no place is absolutely safe for everyone. Everywhere you go you need to keep aware of your surroundings and not present yourself as an easy victim.

Everyone should live in NYC for a year. It's the best on the job training one could ever possibly ask for to be safe in most other environments :)

NYC of today is like disneyland compared to the NYC I grew up in in the 1960's, 70's and 80's.
