I got ice certified with a plain jane Dacor Viper. You Apex should be fine. The Sherwoods are a very good cold water reg, but I wouldn't buy one just for ice diving.
A typical ice dive around here doesn't get particularly deep. As long as the air in your tank has been properly filtered, that is dry and you remember not to prebreath your reg on the surface, you'll be fine.

I only have 2 ice dives in, and will get 2 more next week. I am using my XTX 50 as a primary and another on my slung al40 (for my required redundant system). The air temp was 5 f and the water 35 f. They worked flawlessly for me. In fact, I think the majority at our dives were Apeks.

Thank's everyone. After talking with my LDS again I figured out exactly what was up with the whole "issue". I used the xtx50's the things worked great no complaints. Just had to be cautious like everyone else. He wasn't trying to sell me anything new, just wanted to warn me and give me the proper information I needed before jumping in head first GREAT LDS explained everything!
