I do mostly colder water dives but occasionally will travel. For this I’m looking for recommendations on a steel backplate and a aluminum backplate that can use the same wing. I was originally going to use the xdeep zen then get a mares xr steel backplate to switch to when I am diving in cold water. Someone told me that xdeep wings won’t work with other backplates. Is this true and if so what do you recommend using.

Traveling with a SS plate is no problem unless you're trying to include an unusual amount of other stuff in your luggage.

I would look at Sub Gravity. You get a choice of 3 backplates (2 stainless steel & an aluminum), 4 wings and 2 harness types. The Sub Gravity wings have a built in tank stabilizer, so they don't require a single tank adapter. Paragon Single Tank Package - Subgravity
