Wouldn't you know it: I'm leaving for the Philippines in a week, and last Thursday I fell on the ice and did damage to my hand (scapholunate dissociation with scaphoid fracture.) Can't get my cast wet.

Has anyone done diving with a cast? If so, how did you keep it dry?

I figure I'm out of luck, but I thought I'd see what you have to say!

Obviously a cast has to stay dry.... Personally I would be inclined to have the cast removed at the last minute and try taping it. What does your doctor say?

R..

I had my wrist in a cast for about a year, after the normal plaster cast got demolished, they made a cast/mold of my arm to hand & whipped up a polypropylene cast held on with straps & velcro. Verrry nice.
They do make little "cast bags" that are good for snorkeling/showering etc, but I wouldn't want to take one very deep because of the squeeze.
There are always the plastic covered metal forearm/hand splints wrapped with an ace bandage, used one of those several times while diving.
You may just want to take care of it & not mess with it too much though, getting arthritis in all the places that have been broken & otherwise messed up can be very irritating in cold damp weather. :wtf:

I don't think that it is all that big of a deal as a fiber one can get wet.

... like diving ?
More like that darn surface interval, or just plain living in the PNW.

I found a link to those "cast bags" I mentioned earlier: http://www.xerosox.com
They have the critters at my local Kaiser Med Center.

I second that!

You could always "vacuum" the air out of the bag. As long as the cast can hold up to the pressure...

I'd test it shallow first, just to be safe...

If the swelling will allow, get a fiberglass cast.

I had this problem this past sept. I broke 2 bones in my right foot. After 2 weeks in a plaster cast I couldnt take it anymore!!! After speaking to the doc we ended up going to a walking boot and removable cast and when I did a few local dives, I would wrap it and then cover it with an ankle brace. The bandage and brace dries reasonably fast after each dive so it wasnt too bad.

The hardest part was making sure I didn't lose a fin since I really couldnt feel it through all the wrapping!!!

Just talk with your doc and I am sure things will work out great!!

I guess I'll be the first to say this is a crazy Idea...heh

With a cast, and a damaged limb, do you feel you'll be able to get out of an emergency underwater? Will you be able to don and doff your gear without further injuring your hand? Can you help a buddy if they have problems?

I have no clue what type of injury yours is, since I'm far from being a doc....

i'd second getting a fiber cast. i had one done for me when i was sailing competativly and broke my wrist. had it in bright green.... no issues with getting wet at all.
