Part 1

So, we've decided that the Wrinkles Dive will be on the second Saturday of each month and that for the month of April, it will be in Los Angeles County.

I suggest that we make it a diving and camping weekend at Leo Carrillo State Park. This worked out really well in Dec and will give the people who can only make it on a Sunday a chance to make it to the Wrinkles Dive in April.

The BBQ could take place on either Saturday or Sunday and each of us could just make our own arrangements for eating on the alternate day. Let us know which you prefer.

Part 2

Also, there is one other thing that we may as well address at the same time in this same thread. For May, we still have to decided what we are going to do. The options that have been presented in the past are as follows:

  • Continue our rotation to the north and have the next one in Santa Barbara
  • Start again in San Diego and consider going further north in the future when there are more Santa Barbara members actively participating on the board
  • Plan a boat dive
  • Other (give us a new idea)

Here is what the current possibilities look like for a year depending on what we decide to do in May:

Month - with Santa Barbara or boat dive - starting over in San Diego

January ---- San Diego County -------------San Diego County
February --- Orange County --------------- Orange County
March------ Catalina Island ---------------- Catalina Island
April ------- Los Angeles County ----------- Los Angeles County
May ------- Santa Barbara County or Boat - San Diego County
June------- San Diego County ------------- Orange County
July ------- Orange County ---------------- Catalina Island
August ---- Catalina Island ---------------- Los Angeles County
September- Los Angeles County ----------- San Diego County
October --- Santa Barbara County or Boat - Orange County
November - San Diego County ------------- Catalina Island
December - Orange County ---------------- Los Angeles County

If we get this ironed out now, we can have a Calendar that extends out for the rest of the year making it easier for everyone to plan. Also, let's make sure that we are not conficting with any other major dive events like we did with the Catalina Cleanup in February.

I'll put the April planning thread up when it looks like we have reached a consensus for that location.

Please, everyone participate by sharing your thoughts in this thread. This is all about making decisions about what everyone wants as a group. Once this all falls into place, we can just follow what we've come up with and only have to decide on a specific location in each county. I'm actually wondering if we should just set those as the same places each time as well, so let us know what you think about that.

Thanks.

Christian

Yes :)

Here's my 2 cents worth.

March -Catalina (done deal)
April - LA (hoping to start getting better weather)
May -San Deigo (should be nice)
June -Orange County (will probably have June gloom weather)
July -Catalina (Definitely a weekend thing, we are now into full summer mode)
August - Santa Barbara (water should be warming up nicely to go further north)
Sept. - LA
October-OC
November- SD

December
Janruary
and February (all tentative on the weather.)

We will be in LA,OC and SD twice and once in SB
We could always do boat dives on the 4th week, there is no BBQ stuff to deal with so, it could be more spontaneous.

Let's get this thread discussion started. :)

ouch... someone is having a bad day. :D ill be at all cept for the up north dives thought bout it and ill pass. ive only got bout 25 dives and ive seen half as many sharks not going to push my luck up there. in case your wondering YES im a wimp when it comes to whites.

Hey Christian, I had a blast at Leo Carrillo in December, I'm down to do it again. Camping and diving works great. May would be a decent time to come up to Santa Barbara, any sooner and the conditions are a little iffy. We get lots of upwelling when the winds pick up and the water can get a little chilly, but very clear.
October is probably the best time to dive up here too, which I noticed would be another option.

Slyder: I have over 300 dives in the Santa Barbara channel and the biggest shark I've ever seen is a 4-5 ft thresher shark. I am a research diver at UCSB and the only white shark siting I've heard of by any of our divers (lots of gossip in the dive locker) is out of the thousands of dives our divers do, one of our divers saw a 6-8 footer diving off of San Miguel Island last year while diving in a kelp forest. To tell you the truth, I'm more worried about urchins and sheephead than whites around here .

Christian, I think its a great idea to have a set calendar. It will help me organize my dive schedule, I can probably make all the LA and OC dives, might be able to make SD dives too, but I would probably be more inclined to do more than 1 day of diving though if i drove all the way down to San Diego. Santa Barbara seems like a long ways away for those of you who have never been up here but it is only about 60 miles from Thousand Oaks, ~150 miles from Irvine. There's lots of great diving around here to top it off too.

Hopefully I'll see you guys at the April Wrinkles Dive. I should be there.

See y'all at Carrillo for Friday and Saturday night camping....yea!!!
Re: the rest of the schedule....yes, yeah, ok, sounds good, I'll be there, not worried about sharks - bring 'em on!, at least there won't be seal bombs, and yes, "all of the above"...unless Shaka says differently....

I think Leo Carrillo sounds like a great idea and really, I am all for consistency. We have a set date and a set region, I see no reason not to go with the specific place that works. Sure we may want to move around a bit in the future but for now let's just go with what works and since we only have a few weeks to the next dive that means Leo Carrillo. As for the subject of trekking up farther North, I'm all for the trip but I'm not so sure it should be a part of the Wrinkles monthly dive. Santa Barbara is a great place and we have members up there who want to dive with us but its also a loooong trek for a large group to make. Perhaps the best bet is to rotate around SD-OC-LA-Catalina every month and also incorporate a Santa Barbara dive for a second weekend in a month or two and go back every few months thereafter! With the warm season here it's not like we can't go diving more than once a month ;) I just don't want to see a lot of people unable to make a dive for the entire month because of a long drive but at the same time we should be up to that part of SoCal sometime soon.

It looks like everyone so far is cool with Leo Carrillo for Sat and Sun.

Unless something changes dramatically, I'll put the planning thread up tomorrow.

Now, we still need to address May.

Do we go back to San Diego, up to Santa Barbara or do a boat dive. The idea of monthly boat dives is starting to take off in the other thread, so maybe the Wrinkles dives should remain beach dives.

So... what do you think about May?
