Orangelion,

Where in the heck did you find that picture? That was the Beaver! During the program we all had bages that stated 'We are Beaver believers" which had a different conatation 45 years ago.

The tower was placed to practice docking and diver lock out at depth. The rear chamber flooding for DL was a first class failure.

I guess we were not aware that it was a technical dive in those days, used compressed air and some how survived with out DIR, GUD and PADI. Had we known it was going to be a boring dive we could have some how some way spiced it up for the divers of the 21 century, little late now.

The Beaver was last reported in a yard in Huston Texas slowly decaying.

Sad!

Cheers from California--where it all began

Sam;

Found that pic on the NOAA web site, photo archive section. It was the only thing that came up when I searched for Beaver DDS (well, that and a lot of dentists).

I hope I run into you someday and you can tell me more about the project.

Thanks!

The late Dr. Andy Rechnitzer was the program manager--check out the USN FRNS 11, and the Challenger Deep dive in January 1960 or 62.

The late Dr. Richard Terry was the technical assistant --Check out "Mount Terry" in the Chalenger deep. The ONLY sea mount in Challeger Deep name for an American!!!!!

Ralph White was one of the DDS Beaver pilots --Check out the Titanic dives..Ralph was the pilot on most of the Titanic dives.

Ed Cargile was also a DDS Beaver Pilot

The late Joe Thompson was also a DDS Beaver pilot.

I was the DSO for a while.

My assistant and office mate was a summer hire named Bob Ballard, Check out the Titanic and a zillion other things Bob has done in the last 40 years..

So your home work is cut out for you.......

I live in Pismo-- Ever up this way we can chat diving and the Beaver. Yes, I have been around awhile....

Cheers from California --where it all began,

orangelion03:
I was reading about a wreck diving trip organized by Tech Diving Limited on their web site and they mentioned a few wrecks I was not aware of, nor could I find info on the Cal Wreck Divers site. The sites in question are called "Submarine Docking Station", off Catalina in some 200+ feet, "B-36" and "Missile Launcher" off of LA someplace in 200+ feet. I'm certainly not qualified to dive these sites but am interested in their history more than anything else.

FYI, this is a B-36 Peacemaker (aka Aluminum Overcast)

A friend of mine is the guy that found it. Steve Donathan. Here is the write up on the find. It is pretty interesting reading. Steve isn't with us anymore, but he did some amazing things.

Steve's yahoo group is still going strong

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/taopitek/

most of the core members at sdtechdiving.com were trained by Steve
Thanks. I'll have to look into that. I didn't have the pleasure of training with him. I worked with him from time to time on a couple of DCI's boats. Do you know if his group is still meeting on Wednesdays at the Shores?

no the Burgers and Bubbles have not been going on.
