Now Sparky, it seems that you have been used a as pawn in a wicked web of deception. For the past couple of weeks on more than one board, verbally, pm's and e-mails a number of references have been made to the current condition of the Tiller wreck.

Since my company had been the only boat running to the wreck since January a number of trolls have been trying to point fingers.

Now I captian most days and keep an eye on everyone getting back on board. I have not seen anything come back on the boat that shouldn't.

I actually did a dive on the wreck a month ago and it was no different then it was the first time I dove it three years ago.

Now in order to remove the amount of silt that has been mentioned one would have to use an air lift. I just happen to own one and know how much work goes into using it. It is not an easy job and in 100' would be unbaearable. If anyone was out there with an air lift we would have noticed.

Did you ever think to consider moter nature??

The Carolina Rose in tobermory has been moved more than once since it sank by winter storms.

Anchor damage???

Did you not know that the Tiller Wreck sits in the anchorage zone for the St. Lawrence Seaway?? That's why Ian Marshall has to file a notice to mariners when the marker goes up.

So I am off to Rockport this weekend to pick up my 60lb navy anchor. I just may have to drop it on your keyboard if you don't give up these stupid accusations LOL

p.s. scuba steve, good job today, I may have to let you out of bilge cleaning duty this weekend

I was wondering if you were going to comment. You are correct, maybe I have been used as a pawn.. I am aware of the notice to mariners and the wrecks location in the anchorage.
Unfortunately you didn't get it either.. I didn't accuse you or Steve of anything.. I didn't actually point any fingers in any directions. I did point out the fact that people (in general) still remove artifacts. Heck, I havne't even been out to the Tiller, so I don't even know what it looks like.
As a correction, you are not the onlu chater, and lets not forget the many people with private boats. There are many more private boaters than charters...
COngratulations on having an airlift. Cool tool.. Always wanted to see one work on real life. Only seen them on TV so far. AS for anchor damage.. check the local marina's.. I know a few people who don't know what the marker is for and still drop anchors around there.. No they are not divers.. just regular boaters.. education is all that will help there..

I have a 70lb anchor.. Mine's bigger than yours.. and I have mine at home I've never dropped one on a keyboard, but I have dropped it on my foot.. ouch.. Now just relax and have fun on Rockport..

OTE was the only one out there this year until last month, and this crap started months ago.

Is he annoyed about this? I would suspect he is, since he has tens of thousands of dollars at stake he sure should be.

You can be damn sure if you two had that $$$ on the line, you'd hate your operation being erronerously, and intentionally slandered too.

I can live with the thought that you guys didn't know what was coming off, although it was hard to miss.

I've got your back OTE. I'm the guy with the 7ft long toothbrush, for the bilge damn it! This isn't an "S" drill!

I have a wreck preservation question.. How do you prevent people from removing (or moving) artifacts from wrecks??

Jumping in late to this discussion. Moving to Europe has changed my attitude about wreck preservation a bit (I used to be take pictures/leave bubble) so I'd like to share my perspective. I hope I stir up some conversation without getting too much in the way of the highly amusing pissing match between sparky and steve.

I hear a recent report that one of my favorite wrecks looks like someone has been digging around it (and in it) and some of the item previously there are gone...
Its sad that this type of thing is still going on

I'd say a couple of things about this:

1) Look at it for what it is. It's junk. Garbage. Refuse. A pile of twisted useless metal. An object with no intrinsic value other than the value it has to act as shelter to fish. It's like coming across and old bit of mining equipment or a scrapped car in the mountains (happens regularly in BC). If someone sees the need to take part of that home and hang it on their wall then I don't see the problem. Personally I don't hang refuse on my walls but some people get a genuine kick out of it. More power to them if they can convince their spouses to do this, I say.

2) Some wrecks have a genuine archaeological value and they should just be left to the experts until the experts are done with it.

3) Some wrecks have a lot of bodies on them. These wrecks (I believe) act as the only grave the family of the deceased have and removing part of such a wreck is like removing part of a grave-stone from a grave. Unethical. By the 2nd generation it should generally be opened up.

4) A rare number of wrecks have a cultural value far exceeding the intrinsic value of the wreck and should be just left alone. I think some war wrecks and wrecks like the Titanic are examples of this. Displaying artifacts from these wrecks is like selling pieces of broken glass from the world trade centres..... It may connect people better to the past but you debase the cultural value of these objects and some cultural memories (objects) are (or should be) sacred.

apology somewhat accepted.....although why it took you so long to figure out either a) we really didn't know about what was going on between y'all , and/or b) we didnt care. Been too busy to pay attention to the yelling and screaming between people. More important things to do....couldn't be bothered with keeping track of points. Does that make you feel better? I'm not sure I do....
