Out of personal interest and curiosity, does anybody know anything about some sort of wreckage that's supposed to be located close to N 45° 02.140' W 083° 19.589' (Google Maps link)? Apparently you can see it from the surface, so it's gotta be real shallow.

If one wanted to snorkel or dive there, would it be accessible from the shore (is that road drivable?) or would you need a boat? I've checked the map of the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary, and the spot is marked with a dot, but without any further info (none that I could find, anyway).

Any sort of info appreciated.

That seems to be close to the wreckage of the Haltiner Barge. It was a derrick barge that was washed ashore and busted up in 1929. Also in that area, it is rumored that wreckage from other wrecks in the bay washed up and got jumbled together over the years and may be mistaken for wrecks. That's the story anyways. Hope this helps.

Ah yes, thanks, that indeed seems to be it! Do you (or anyone else) know if shore access from the nearby road is possible?

I am pretty sure that is the barge wreck. It is a public road so you can drive out there. It's been a really long time since I was out there but back then there wasn't much in the way of shoulders to let you get off the road. I have no idea how much of a chore it would be to get out there from shore but it's probably doable on a calm day. I've been on it a couple of times when we were blown of the lake. There really isn't much to see, but.....it is a wreck!

That's what has been called Scanlon's Barge for decades but NOAA is calling it Haltiners Barge now. No public access from shore, the Lafarge Supervisors Club is the nearest buildiing (a cement block structure).

It is in three sections, one is the boom, another section of winches, and a third wooden piece. Heard tell there may be a boiler futher out but I lack the coordinates. If snorkling Scanlons barge and the wind has not been heavy from the south you should check out the Rend, about 1/4 mile off the dust piles by the cement plant. and I can give you a lot more. Thunder Bay has 24 shipwrecks in less than 20' of water.
