Dove WPB today on ' Kyalami Too '. Kyalmai Too is the former and long time dive boat 'Scuba-Club' that has a well respected history of operation from way back into the 1980's operating out of West Palm. In that almost half century of dive operations they are the longest running and most storied dive boat in WPB. Captain Luke Smith has the experience and skills to match the boat's reputation. Before noon was calm seas. In the afternoon,, the front whipped up and we were in 5 footers, 25 mph winds and pouring rain (it's Florida-wait a minute). On this PM drop that started out calm, the hunters dropped on a 100 ft deep reef that included a small artificial structure followed by a sloping double ledge for bugs and lions. Currents were moving quick at 2knots which spread out the divers who paused to snag, but also kept them on a straight line at a 180 degree bearing on the GPS. For the captain it's >>run the GPS line and pickup divers, even when you can't see those SMB's in the 5ft troughs and pouring rain. Capt Luke ran it text book style grabbing his far end divers first and letting the others drift right up to him in the 2 knot current and moving the boat back up the line. I've seen bad captains chase diver's from behind as others get further away and it's a mess in really rough seas. Couple of us help spot for SMB's and it's easy to do the roll call.
Bottom temps were still toasty at 80° and current started in the morning at 1knot and increased to 2knots in the afternoon. Surprisingly>>> visibility was 50 ft even with the offshore hurricane swell. Hoping that the rest of these September storms calm down so we can get out more. Really fun day with everyone including birthday cake & flat seas before the storm hit !!
