Nuno Gomes does not hold the current record. His record was beaten just 3 weeks later by Pascal Bernabe, sponsored by Ralf Tech (330m). Look up Ralf Tech and Pascal's dive is described in detail on their site (including stops, gas mixes, equipment, the dive itself, etc).
As far as depth records go, there's nothing wrong with them.
Exactly. Some folks get a thrill out of eating the most hotdogs. Other folks get a thrill out of sitting in a box for a week. It gets televised.
If someone wants to set the record for the deepest dive, more power to you. That's something I'd like to see televised.
If I didn't know any better, I would think some folks can't stand hearing about others who have gone deeper than them. But I know better so I don't think that

It seems crazy to us, but I think Mark Elyatt (previous OC depth record holder) described it best when he said that for him, Nuno, etc. going to 300m+ was not a terrifying experience. For them it was an incremental increase in depth, risk, etc on their previous dives. They have slowly pushed the boundaries over many, many years until they felt that going to 315, 318, 330m was another incremental increase in terms of risk, skills, experience, etc.
For me that makes a lot of sense and I don't think that what they do is "crazy".

Televised? Maybe the pre-dive preparation, descent and after the dive itself. Not the whole thing though! Can't imagine that sitting & watching 9 hours of deco will be terribly exciting. Unless the deep diver & support team entertain us by chasing each other around the descent line and playing crazy games & tricks on each other!
