I am not familiar with the Ikelite housing, but if there is some sort of cord and an opening for it, you could gerry-rig a plastic tie to the lanyard for the housing. I think I would be more confident in the tray. Might as well get used to it!

Yeah, you're right. I haven't really inspected the housing since I got it but I'm pretty sure there isn't a place for a cord. The tray is probably my safest bet. Plus I'm concerned I'll accidentally open the housing if my fingers are always gripping it over the latches!(even though the pressure probably wouldn't let me - but what can I say, I'm paranoid!)
