Doesn't work too well on a lot of small boats that either don't have a ladder or have a small detachable ladder that hangs over the stern or side of the boat.
On a lot of the smaller boats I've dived on you need to "float" your gear while climbing in over the side of the boat, then hoist your gear in after you're on board.
