Help me here....what exactly do you recommend?
The wing must have enough capacity when inflated to keep the rig from sinking should you remove it at the surface. I don't know why you keep saying "I disagree" and then say the same thing I said (twice now). You might need more coffee! 😆

John, don't disagree ...not certain what constitutes 'excess' as that denotes an optimal amount of buoyancy vs weight through out the dive profile...
I think "Excess" means more lift than the diver needs to safely dive.

Excess lift however, might come in handy if say they have to deal with a buddy who has a failed wing at depth and no ditchable lead, or finding an anchor, or maybe a weightbelt (which I have done dozens of times). In those situations I have found it beneficial to have (a moderate amount) of excess capacity that I can use as a tool in those somewhat unusual situations.

I don't advocate for having a huge wing, but on the other hand, many people on this forum seem to take pride in how little lead they carry, their decision to carry zero ditchable lead, how little lift their BC has, how little air they use and few other metrics, which are outside of my personal aspirations.

Cool! I was confused by your statement in Post #2 "That said, the wing does need to float your rig if you remove it at the surface.".... I simply was misreading that, sorry.

Like I said....all good....my error And yes I always need more coffee!

Those things tend to be indicator of proficiency. But like most indicators, they aren't perfect and you need to confirm or infirm with other indicators and take factors they simplify into consideration.

And like most indicators, when they are used as objective they lose all their interest as best. And at worst they then push people to behave unwisely in order to meet them.

For reference with my comments, they are based on XDeep NX [+42.7lbs] w/SS plate; nominally a 80cf Al bottle....with weight pouches and weight belt; all weights releasable. Pouch weights, any trim weights and weight belt change with fresh water or marine dives....not much but again a lot depends on how deep I am diving and sea state, heavy surge or current on bottom = ability to 'get negative'. 44lbs + is always sufficient for my needs.
