Hello,
I am a new diver, actually getting certified in 2 weeks. I have been reading this forum ALOT (so i would not re-ask questions) and have a few questions. I have seen a few posts saying the whole BP/W topic has been beaten to death...with this in mind ill try to keep to the point.

BP- are the holes all in standard positions? ie.) can any harness, wing, bp interchange?

wings- i have seen "O" styles and upsidedown "U" styles. of bladders. Does this effect bouyance?

thank you,
-Bob

The holes are mostly standard 11" c to c. The ones with multiple on plate and wing allow you to shift around for trim purposes. I have only dove "u" for single and double although I hear the "o" is better for single as the air can flow around and not get hung up in one side or another. Hope that helps

Generally, most backplates and wings from the major manufacturers are interchangeable

Make sure and pay attention to whether or not you need an STA (single tank adapter). Some wings do not require one, such as the DSS singles wings. They are designed to provide the necessary support for the tank without the STA. Many folks feel that an STA option for singles is always more stable, but that seems to be based upon older non-STA wings. From my research, it looks like the newer non-STA wings do a much better job of stabilizing the tank than the older options.

Yes, and no. If you are using banded manifolded double tanks, then you need at least one pair of holes in the both the back plate and the center panel of the wing at 11" centers. Virtually all plates and doubles wings have at least one set of holes, some have multiple sets to allow for trim adjustments.

If your are using a single tank with a Single Tank Adapter (STA) again all you need is holes in the wing and plate at 11" centers. STA's bolt on just like doubles, the cambands go around the tank, around the STA, but do not go through the wing or the plate.

If you want to use a Plate without a STA, i.e. one where you run the cambands thru the wing, and thru the plate, you need the slots in the center panel of the wing to align with the slots in the plate.

There are no "standard" sizes or locations for these slots.

My recommendation is to source both your wing and plate from the same company.

Using a single tankk wing for single tank diving is important, avoid "do it all" compromise wings. Both Narrow horeshoe wings and Donut style wings work fine.

The 11 inch spacing seems to be the most common and most accepted. For a extensive list of different backplate and wing features, check out this website.
