Unfortunately, I need a lens with a built in focus motor, which the 10-17 doesn't have. So it would appear that the best options are the Nikon 10-24, the Tokina 11-16, or the Tokina 12-28, which all seem to have fairly similar minimum focal distances. So is there anything about the Nikon 10-24 feature wise that would make it worth $300 more than one of the Tokinas?

I have the Tokina 11-16/2.8, though I havent used it underwater. It is very sharp, quick focus, and overall a really nice lens. You can get zoom gear for it. The 10-24 may have an advantage underwater with the 24mm for critters that don't let you get as close.
