I chose:

  • Access to diving experts who share knowledge;
  • Good source of travel info;
  • If I can't be underwater, I like to at least talk about it; and
  • Beats the heck out of doing work.

In particular I would like to single out CaveDiver and TSandM for being supportive sources of knowledge.

I did not chose:

  • Honest appraisals of gear and courses by real divers

because, while good advice can be found on SB, I believe that halemanō is at least partly correct in his appraisal of there being a strong bias on SB, especially with respect to gear. Really, folks, if someone insists that they are only going to be a vacation diver and they only plan to dive a few times a year in warm water, there is no reason to object to their getting a rear-inflate BC (or even a jacket style BC) rather than a BP/w. If someone has taken an AOW course and the dive agency recommended that a pony bottle is sufficient and desirable redundancy for deeper recreational dives, and that diver does not want to get into diving doubles, there is no reason for anyone, Wuever they are, to denigrate the poster. The list goes on.

All in all, SB is a great resource.

I first came here so that I could live through others. I wanted to read stories about diving while I'm inside during the cold winter months. I discovered that I could learn a lot and quickly became addicted to taking in the knowledge the site has to offer. I had never heard of so many things that I've learned from here, from equipment to gas mixes to technical diving. I couldn't seem to read enough about it and see enough pictures.

Now I just come here hoping to run into Dr. Bill. He's just so charming! :blinking:

Scubaboard was originally a way for me to keep my underwater knowledge sharp during my latest tour to Iraq, having been certified a few months before that. As I kept reading I learned that I truly knew Jack about diving so I started learning from the folks who knew what they were doing, and asking questions.

Now, a hundred-plus dives later with some non-PADI training and a whole bunch of experience under my belt, I can help others avoid mistakes that I see every day I go diving while still learning from the experts. It's my way of contributing to both the scuba community and also the underwater world in general.

Peace,
Greg

You learn stuff. Get new ideas. Debate topics--sometimes your opinion changes, sometimes not. It's definately entertaining. Very helpful for travel. Tons of good advice from "Going Pro". And it's something to do in retirement between dives and TV shows.

The board can be fun & informative. But sometimes I come across a member who I just want to kick in the nose till their arse bleeds.

I was reading a post just recently that started off well, moved into mild sycophancy, & then degenerated into the usual, agenda driven, 1 eyed nonsense, that has caused so much moderation in the recent past.

I have a secret crush on Dr Bill....not so secret now that I posted in the largest online scuba community.

Halemano, did it occur to you that YOUR experience is also a local one? I submit that, if you travelled up and down the coast of California, the equipment you would see would far better match what I talk about, than what you generally see. I will heartily agree that what equipment you use and the kind of diving you do depends a great deal on whether you do four dives in Maui once a year, or 200 in cold and warm water, caves and wrecks. But each of us speaks from his own experiences, and the reader simply takes away either the information relevant to HIS environment, or whatever consensus he can find.

I am fairly anal about where and how I type, so I know I steer clear of most gear discussions that are local cold water divers, and I know that I portray the vast majority of my advise as coming from more of a warm water, vast majority perspective... :dontknow:

...often after a new member/new diver with no profile get's a bunch of expert sounding answers that are just worded ignorantly, given the lack of info to work with :shakehead:

I am in it for the knowledge. I love that other divers come together to share there experiences to help other dives. I am not a member of the other boards. I really like this one because all the different forums have different rules. I like the GREEN zones that weed out the AZZholes. This is a good board.
