Another world. Like, I'll never be an astronaut...but I can escape this world for an hour anytime that I need to.

You can interact with living creatures unlike on land. I can swim in a school of fish...they'll take me for a tour of their reef. When was the last time you took a stroll through the woods and had a deer walk down the path with you? It just doesn't happen.

And the amazing thing about diving...it doesn't matter how stressed my life is on land...YOU CAN'T TAKE IT UNDER THE WATER!!! The stress does not have the ability to submerge with you. And when you surface, some of the stress has wandered away on it's own...and it's not even waiting for you.

JanR:
How much trouble do you think I'd get into if I answered, "Because it's the only time I get to spend time with my wife and don't have to listen to her talk?"

Jan

Don't assume that not talking will keep you in the clear. About a year ago, my wife and I had an underwater argument via hand signals (or at least finger signals)!

I'm sure this thread has been done b4 but I haven't seen it. I was just interested in what keeps people returning to scuba divimg? In my case, I think that it's the peace & relaxation I get when i am down there....The weightlessness, nobody is talking, requirement to focus on what you are doing....those are the main things that have always drawn me back.
I needed an explanation for the amount of money I spent on dive equipment :14:

Yea no kidding... sink all that cash into it before you jump in the pool for the first time and you're pretty much locked in.

I live on a small tropical island in the Pacific, what else is there to do?? Looking at the pretty girls on the beach gets old real fast.

Here is my diving Koan ((c) 2003)

A Zen Scuba Instructor saw five of his students return from their last scuba diving practice carrying all of their scuba gear. When they had stopped, the teacher asked the students, "Why do you scuba dive?" The first student replied, "Scuba Diving is exercise and it is also good for you to learn how to breathe!" The teacher praised the student, saying, "You are a smart boy. When you grow old, you will not breathe as laboriously as I do." The second student replied, "I love to watch the coral and the rocks and sand pass by as I swim." The teacher commended the student, "Your eyes are open and you see the world." The third student replied, "When I dive, I am content to chant in my mind, nam myoho renge kyo." The teacher gave praise to the third student, "Your mind will travel with the ease of a properly weighted diver." The fourth student answered, "Diving under the water’s surface, I live in harmony with all beings." The teacher was pleased and said, "You are swimming as though on the golden path of non-harming." The fifth student replied, "Why teacher, I dive to dive." The teacher went and sat at the feet of the fifth student, and said, "I am your disciple."

Flea Dog:
Because my wife doesn't... :D

And that makes it the ONE place that the wife can't find a way to yell at ya or tell ya to do something

Here are a few reasons in no particular order.

1) Because I really like the 50F water in inland Ohio.

2) Because 5 foot vis is fantastic.

3) The airplane like flying thing is cool.

4) I like technical or education involved hobbies.

5) Some exercise.

6) To be different.

7) To get close to the stuff I could see when snorkeling.

8) To celebrate the completion of an MBA (March 2007).

9) Because I sank the money in gear.

10) Because the boss (cool guy) has never asked me to take company provided electronics on vacation. :light:

11) Lugging heavy wet gear upstairs and into the bathroom is part of my total fitness program.

12) To be able to see the water's surface from the other side.

13) For an opportunity to confront fears.

14) To meet the people as pleasantly off beat as myself. :D

15) I'd just spend my salary on beer, rock n' roll, and cheap women. :eyebrow:

16) Where else would I be at dawn on a weekend than quarryside, surrounded by frost, steam rising from the water???

17) After spending so much time and $$$ on school, I wanted fun-school.

18) It gives me an excuse to go to Florida.

19) Because it's like running, only under water, and primarily horizontal, and without impact, and slower, and more expensive...wait, that's a stupid reason.

20) Years of beaches, boats, and Jacques.
