The following passage by Captain Nemo sums up my feelings when diving:

"The sea is everything........Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides. The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the 'Living Infinite,' ..........The sea does not belong to despots. Upon its surface men can still exercise unjust laws, fight, tear one another to pieces, and be carried away with terrestrial horrors. But at thirty feet below its level, their reign ceases, their influence is quenched, and their power disappears. Ah! sir, live -- live in the bosom of the waters! There only is independence! There I recognise no masters! There I am free!"

I wanted to dive since I was a young kid. I blame it on Jacques Cousteau. I was spellbound by his TV shows and I never lost the fascination with the ocean. Even today, I am captivated by underwater cinematography. I defy anyone to watch The Blue Planet series and not ache to go diving. The chance to see those creatures in their habitat is what got me started and it is still what keeps me going.

For me, I've always loved the water and had the curiosity of "what's down there".... And wanted to find out.... But was never brave enough to try to get certified.... I didn't think I could do it previously due to water issues.... And I had/showed horses so no time or money.... I decided last year after selling the horses to take a break that I wanted to check out diving... I went snorkeling to see how I'd do and was hooked.... An ex & a co-worker were cert. and they would talk about their travels.... So I did.... What keeps me diving is what's down there, the marine life, the water, the fact I could do it, the social aspect of friends, the travel and just because I love diving......:D

Its like being released from the troubles and termoil on the suface, "it lays your burdens down". You can be free at last; to be in touch with you inner feelings and you can test you mind, body and soul!

I always feel previlaged to experience the extraordinary underwater world.

Live to Dive .... Dive to Live!

No I don't own a Harley.

As I child, I too was captivated by Cousteau and his explorations under the sea. Later, as people began to dive in one of our local lakes I wanted to join them and finally did when I was 14 in 1985. The lake is no longer open but I am still diving and enjoy it as much, if not more, than when I originially started. There is nothing like diving on a new wreck or watching schooling fish swim by you as if you're part of their environment. The smell of salt air is really refreshing and instantly washes away whatever stress I have accumulated over the week. I could go on and on about why I dive...........

Frankly, I dont know why I dive....

I read the posts people seeing the great JC, the life forms, the weightlessness.... yes all very appealing... but not why I dive.. I really dont know.

As I read these posts, the no cell phone bonus became clear, but the feeling of calm is a the best. It reminds me of skiing in a snow fall. No noise, take the track you want, being out of your element in general.

It's really quite amazing that what seems to keep most of us coming back has nothing to do with what non-divers picture scuba diving to be all about....ie: Daring, Danger, Adrenilin Rush, etc
That may be what initialy attracts some people to the sport, but it appears to be the peaceful & weightless ease of it that really hooks us & keeps us coming back!
(my guess is that the people who get into scuba for the daring of it all....have a few photos taken of them in their dive gear (to prove that they have the "Right Stuff"), make a few dives (probably deep so, if they survive the experience, they can brag about it) & then sell their (praticaly new) gear on Ebay!<G>
