I got to try it our in a pool at Mass Maritime academy when I was a 13 year old boy scout. Later that year, my dad asked if I had any fun ideas for a father & son bonding activity we could do, and I immediately thought of scuba certification. He hasn't been diving again in the past 15 years, but I got him a mask, fins, and snorkle for christmas.

I figure getting him back into it'll only take me coming up from a dive off his boat with a single lobster and saying, "There was a huge one down there, but I couldn't get him by myself. To bad you didn't bring any dive gear.":innocent:

hi
i had always fancied diving but as i am a bit scared of "things" in the sea i thought i wouldnt like it. my boyfriend used a dive shop to fill his air gun, and told me about try dive sessions for a few pounds. i thought this was a great idea, i never would have signed up for a course as i thought it would be a waste of money
ive been wasting my money on diving ever since - love every minute of it

:D When I was stationed in Hawaii in 1975, the beach was free, and being in the Army during peace time, we had our weekends off. Swimming turned into snorkling with one of the other guys, turned into dive training in about a year. There were plenty of divers around, equipment was inexensive (we didn't have much we needed back then) any I grew up on "Mike Nelson" when I was a kid.

Now ask me why I'm getting back into it at age 48?

I like this thread. It makes me feel so young.

Gosh, alot of you watched Sea Hunt.

well i could go on for hours on why i started diving but i wont .
since i was a boy day dreeming in school its all i could think about , after watching jacque cousteau on the tv the night b4 ,
i think back then i saw every episode they ever made . i knew then that it was what i wanted to do when i grew up !
but time went by and it became impossible for me until a couple years ago . i learned about this guy that teaches you how to scuba dive and the rest is history so to speak , since that night at a friends house ive never been able to get a by a day without thinking about the next time i am going to go diving , i am finally living my life long dream , now only to find a way to make the kinda money i make fishing when i go diving , then it would not be a job it would be a blast!
=-)

Didn't we all just dig those groovy 'futuristic' suits they used to wear? And how about those enclosed, streamlined air-pack thingys (whatever they were)? Or was it just me?

I started diving because my dad was a diver. I guess I just wanted to impress him. The reason I enjoy diving now, is that for me, it's one of those rare activities that tunes everything else out completely. I lose the static, the constant hubbub in my head (noo, not voices ;)), and I can think clearly, without thinking at all.

I think that's why my dad dove too.

Well, some of the others were pretty soppy too! :)
But I have enjoyed reading them a lot, so that's why I added mine.

Chad--I know you made that inference with all due respect or will I need to add some excitement to our next diving excursion? Maybe I should hide your new PST 104's.

Mess with my tanks...mess with your life.

Have I told you about the holster for my 40 cal I am having added to my wetsuit.

Well, it started out with a cruise for my 50th birthday. One of the stops was Cozumel. While we were snorkeling she made the statement: "This is quite nice and beautiful, wonder what it would be like to be down there" (underwater)? When we returned home we investigated and found a LDS we were comfortable with. We are now both PADI Master Divers and haven't looked back since. We live for our next dive trip. It is wonderful to have a wife that loves diving as much as I do. It also is great to go to a dive shop and SHE is looking at things to buy.
Is there a SCUBA GOD or what?
Our only regret is, we didn't do this years ago.

Let me count the reasons One, I was born and raised in Key West, FL. Water always available. Two, as with others watched
Sea Hunt and Jacque Cousteau, found it most fasinating. Three,
dreamed of diving as a sport but mother did not think it an activity for a girl. Three, spent alot of time snorkeling with my husband, who introduced me to snorkeling when we dated in High School. Four, after marriage we and several years we began to travel to and always find places to snorkel. After Hawaii, Mexico, the Virgin Islands, Aruba, and the Bahamas I always said I want more I want to be closer to the fish, I want to learn to scuba. He was not interested, always the practical one, said too
commercial and expensive, he used to dive before cert was required to get air fills. Five, a family trip with my brother and sister to Maui last year was the final draw. They all wanted to dive so I signed up alone and got my certification. Now 53 dives later I am still anticipating my next dives. Love it! Still cant get my husband back in the water though. I keep working on it. Vacation in Feb. he would snorkel but not dive. He anxiously awaits my reports from dive trips and loves to view the photos. My last trip we had a video made and he couldn't wait to play it when it came.

Go figure!!
