Here's the scenario: Long bus ride home from Mexico arrival back at dive shop at 2 am, 3-4 hours behind schedule, military checkpoints, border crossings, etc. When the cargo hold is unloaded and everyone's gear is spread out and when all is said and done, one gear bag is missing. Bag could have been accidentally picked up by another diver, left at one of the many checkpoints and searches or picked up purposely at any of these points. Is anyone liable for the loss? The shop? The bus company? Just bad luck on the part of the owner who now has to replace the gear?

Sounds like lousy luck to me. That's why you have insurance. I think the only one you could even remotely point a finger at would be the bus company, just like you would an airline.

Hi Mudchick,

Not even worth the bother to try to hold anyone liable for such a loss in MX--the case would go nowhere.

If no direct gear insurance, check homeowner's coverage.
