So besides our amazing underwater whale encounter last week, the whale activity topside has been absolutely incredible! On Christmas we were treated to a whale breaching 4x in a row right in front of our boat, a mom and baby with escort about 100' off our starboard side, and today we had 2 whales hanging out with our boat off the backwall of Molokini for about an hour. They kept surfacing and diving right next to the boat (could have fallen in on top of them they were so close), one even went under the boat upside down and we saw his white belly swimming by, and more whale tail than I could count. :D:D

This is unusual for so early in the season and the topside whale show is rivaling the diving for excellence.

I sure hope they are still as active in two months when we get there. Last year we saw a small pod of four on a Pacific Whale Foundation boat and drifted with them for 15-20 minutes.

What magnificent animals.

Peak hump-back whale season is January through March, but they start to arrive the middle of December and leave the middle of April. Last April they were very active up till the 2nd week off the east side of Ohau!
