I have been shopping around for equipment, going to different dive shops and talking to them and also internet shopping. I have found 2 different deals that sound good, but I am undecided which one I should get. So any suggestions would be appreciated.
1--BCD- Seaquest Balance
--regs- Aqualung Legend
--computer-Oceanic Veo 100
Price$1129.00

2--BCD-Scuba pro Knighthawk
--Regs- mk17/r395
--Computer- Aladin Prime Console
Price $1372.00\

Thanks

Is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of these packages are set up to bait the diver with a very desirable item and then stick them with something that is hard to sell on it's own?

I wouldn't buy either. I would do some research and get the best for the money. I did not buy all new gear. Just myu $.02

most any sensible shop (including the online ones, Scuba.com for me) will give you deals on any combination of the 3 pieces, just have to ask and see what they offer. For me it was a Zeagle DS-V/ZX with Envoy Octo, Aeris Atmos XT BCD and an Oceanic VT Pro(with transmitter) for ~$1300. Just make some calls and ask around, you might be surprised the deals that you can get. Specially when you throw a computer in on the deal.

???

I'd go with package two, although I like Oceanic computers better. Price does seem a bit high.

If you want to stay in that range, I'd recommend you call ScubaToys and get something like this:

Zeagle Brigade BCD - Medium with Rear Weight Pockets & Yes, please add a BC hanger
Oceanic Delta IV FDX-10 Regulator
Aeris Atmos 2 Nitrox Console
Sub Total: $1,315.80
SB Discount 10%
Total: $1184.22

or

Zeagle Brigade and Delta III Regulator Package
Delta 3 TDX5
Viper Octo
Free Scubatoys Reg Bag
Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus II
Sub Total: $1,499.00
SB Discount 10%
Total: $1,349.10

For an absolute recomendation, I would recommend:

Dive Rite Transpac (or Zeagle BCD)
Atomic B2 & Atomic SS1 for regs
Oceanic VT-3 computer
Apollo Bio-Fin Pro fins
Then pick out a mask, wetsuit and some booties you like and go dive :)

Let me add another part to the question about the 2 different setups. If you could change one of the items in each package as a upgrade, what would you change?

For those prices you could get a top notch BCD (DSS single rig for ~$445 or hammerhead plate/harness and oxycheq wing for a similar price or less), nitrox computer (aeris atmos wrist with USB cable for ~$300 from scubatoys with 10% SB discount) and nice reg with octo and simple brass/glass SPG (Dive-Rite with octo or similar for about ~$350-400 from bunch of places and one of the SPG's on offer for ~$60). That's about $1200-1300 shipped. (Though I'd also pay a little extra to get custom hose lengths when putting in the order).

Those are some highly regarded gear I'm familiar with, but I'm not trying to push them, just making the point that you can buy separately off the net, get more or less exactly what you want and pay more or less the same price you are looking at right now. You just have to inquire about where the good deals are...

One consideration with an online purchase - Check to see what your LDS services. If they don't service the regs, they might be willing to mail them off, and two weeks later you have your regs back. Up north in the winter, not a huge issue. A week you were planning a trip...
