the 5' was too short and pulled the reg slightly. Very annoying.

Ditto.

There is no reason to waste your money on a 5 ft hose.

The only time I'll suggest a 5 foot hose is when I'm outfitting a diver who truly intends to remain an OW diver and whose equipment lacks a good anchor point for the 7 foot routing.

An example would be my wife. She's perfectly happy doing OW dives. She also likes her Libra. I've not found a satisfactory way to route the 7 footer on the Libra because it lacks an attachment point. Neither of us likes tucking it and, overall, it just doesn't work particularly well.

Since there is no chance that she will enter an overhead environment where restrictions are an issue, this is a circumstance in which the shorter hose works well. But its a rather limited scenario.

Good point NEW

Thanks for the input all. Because of geography I'll be doing about 50% OW dives 30% Wreck and the rest Cave- hopefully. So the 7 footer it is... looks like I'll own a peice of equipement that is longer than me!

If I'm not wearing the can for a dive for whatever reason, what else can you tuck the hose under, or does it stay quite tame down there?

If you aren't wearing a light, you can still route the house under your arm and then around your neck. You can just tuck the excess in under your cumberbun or 2" webbing. Realize that any rough waters etc may loosen the hose from your cumberbun. I found out the hard way when I didn't feel like breaking down my cave gear during a dive on the Spiegel Grove...I ended up having hose everywhere because I wasn't wearing my light...I managed, though, and it was okay.

With a plate it can be tucked into the webbing (just one loop - don't wrap it!) or you can move the knife sheath over there and route it under that if you want. The latter doesn't work well for me; the former is marginally acceptable.

Halcyon used to make a "pouch" that has a stiffener in it that went on the right side of the harness - it made for an EXCELLENT routing point if you were not wearing a can light. I have one and use it for that purpose if I don't intend to take the light. I think they stopped making it as it wasn't "DIR enough" for them..... pockets WITHOUT a stiffener don't work well as they flop up and let the hose "escape".

In addition to what's already been suggested, sheathed EMT shears on the right, where the can light would be, makes a satisfactory routing point in an OW configuration.
