I've always found oral-inflate DSMBs to be the best option - safest to deploy.and the least issue with buoyancy variance. Pick a size suitable for the environment you will be diving in (surface visibility vs current/waves) and deploy it with one breath from an appropriate depth. Use gas expansion to the job of filling the DSMB for you.

Lift bags are very old school. There's better options.

I'm a fan of the open ended type, but quality ones are hard to find. Halcyon makes a 4.5' one that I use, all the other open ended ones I've found are glorified plastic bags. Never had a problem with it popping out of the water and deflating, just keep some tension on the line as it ascends. In rough seas it's a little short though. In class it's awesome... you'll have your bag rolled and stowed (nice and small too since there are no inflator or dump valves) while your classmates are still trying to dump the air and water out of theirs. It also doesn't get disgusting on the inside since you can actually dry the thing out.
