hi,

I was wondering if you could help me out. I am looking for a gas-switching nitrox computer. I haven't looked at too many right now, but the ones I have looked at are the Delta P VR2, the zeagle status 2, the dive rite nitek duo, and if I can find one, the dive rite nitek 3. I was wondering if anyone had experiences with any of these computers, and what they like or dislike about them. Also, if I'm missing any other ones that someone could recommend, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Chris

This question sounds familiar...Have you asked it elsewhere recently?

I like the Suunto Vytec...three gases, if you need them...Unfortunately, it doesn't handle He mixes, since the min. o2 % available is 21...

Oh well...I don't use He, so it doesn't matter to me.

As scubasean said...the Suunto Vytec...
You can switch gasses mid-dive with it and I also like the interface which, to me, is intuitive. Being able to set different po2´s for different mixes is also something I like (you can deco on 1.6).

Do a search on the The Deco Stop for each of the computers and you'll find all the info you're looking for.

Chris,

I currently own both. I've had the Nitek 3 about 6 years. Likes: conservative algorithm, easy to program, amount of info displayed, post dive residual nitrogen countdown, user-replaceable battery, owner manual. Dislikes: display is small (hard to read), somewhat bulky (large).

I just got the Duo about three months ago. Likes: same that I have about the Nitek 3, plus the display is large, the computer is not as bulky as the Nitek 3. Dislikes: so far none. I bought the Duo as a backup to the Nitek 3 for my computer dives. I also use it in the gauge mode for technical dives with a Suunto D3. My customer service experience with Dive Rite has been very good, and I have a high opinion of their equipment. As you're probably already aware of, the Nitek 3 can program three mixes, each one for 21%-99% O2. The Duo can program two mixes, Mix 1 for 21%-50%, Mix 2 for 21%-99%.

My only other personal dive computer experience is with an Orca Phoenix.

I have 200+ dives on my vytec. Original battery. It has worked perfectly. Gas switches are intuitive. I also own the HS explorer. 10 mixes and can connect O2 sensor for my rebreather. The learning curve is much higher.
Vytec would be my recommendation.

For a two gas computer, the Duo is very reasonably priced. Its easy to read, and on the conservative side.
I believe the Nitek 3 has been replaced with the Nitek He. The He has similar abilities to the 3, but also can be programed to calculate He in the mix.

First Off,
I'm an authorized Delta-P dealer. If you want a mixed gas computer that will grow with you, as you expand your diving; VR-2 or VR-3 is the way to go,
At this time they do not allow online sales, so check their Authorized Dealer list Before you buy.

I wish they made a VR-2.5 with 4 gas nitrox/trimix. But for the moment, I'll buy an Apeks Quantum, which is the same as the Nitek Duo, and use it in guage mode later on.

I still like my NiTek 3 - and I've recently seen pre-owned ones on Ebay in the $200 to $300 range. If they had been available when I bought my NiTek 3, I probably would have bought a NiTek Plus or NiTek Duo instead, but I see no reason to switch currently.

In the "Computers" etc. forum you can see recent posts from folks who have 'bent' their Vytec computers, and talk about using them in gauge mode instead a lot of the time.
