We are going to Sulawesi in a couple of weeks. One week at Lembeh and one week at Bunaken Cha Cha. I am trying to sort out which currency to take. I think we need to pay for the Visa with US dollars but at the resorts are we better off using US or Indonesian for tips etc?

US and Rupiah are both readily acceptable at the resorts. Most of the resorts in Lembeh charge in US, the ones in Bunaken usually charge in Euros.

You can also pay in Rupiah no problem. But rupiah takes a lot more room in your wallet :)

Second to Mike,
You can always ask for option to pay in Rupiah, but yes, it takes out a looot of room, and it's painful to pay something with a lot of zero..
But in Rupiah, it probably works cheaper too. There are still many things like drink or snack that costs less than a dollar.

You will need Rupiah to pay your airport tax after checking in there is a counter at Manado airport just before you go upstairs to the departure area.

But US Dollars for a Visa on arrival.
IF you do get rupiah out of an ATM, many banks have two different machines, one that gives small bills,. one that gives large. Just ask if you have a preference.
