Bruce Bowker's Carib Inn is pretty good. Basic but nice. The owner, a local diving pioneer is on-site. The place is usually pretty quiet and attracts a fairly sociable crowd. Most guests return for multiple trips. Kitchen facilities are available in many of the units. We had the house, a great deal because it's only a little more than a two-bedroom.

We also stayed at the Divi once. The resort, frankly, is OK. The diving setup is super-convient. Lots of tanks available on the dock all the time, in various sizes. Just walk down and grab one and fall off the end of the pier. Lots of tanks are also available in the shack in the parking lot, for easy loading into your rented dive truck. It's a great set-up for shore diving.

Both Carib and Divi are an easy walk to town, which is really nice.

Can't give you direct Plaza feedback, but our dive travel guide says it is more resort and less dive oriented. So it depends on what your personal preferences are.

You may also want to provide some feedback on what you really want to do during your stay.
- 5 shore dives a day? (think Buddy or Don's so you have a truck as part of the package)
- walk to town a lot? think Divi or Plaza
- 1 dive a day and then shop like crazy (oops, wrong island...)

After many trips we have been returning to Divi lately since it is close to town and allows us to walk (5 or 10 minute max) to supper. Being able to night dive whenever we want and walking to supper pushes it to the top of the list. Like Dons & buddies it has a great house reef, does the multiple boat trips each day & provides tanks for unlimited shore diving but does not generally include a truck. It does provide 24 hour tank and locker access so you can night dive any time you want. Don's & Buddy are too far to walk to town for supper - not an issue if you have a truck and can find a designated driver.

I also echo that you should highly consider not doing an AI. There are way too many VERY good restaurants on the island and many accommodations provide a kitchenette / fridge so you can quickly slap a simple lunch together with provisions from a local market.

Note: The Divi does provide a meal plan so it can be AI, but we only made that mistake once!:)

Stayed at the plaza on my last trip to Bonaire. Have been 10 times to Bonaire and this was my first stay at Plaza or larger resort.
Plaza is fine and would stay there again. I was part of a large group. We stayed in a villa and did some boat dives but mostly shore dives. did about 24 dives in six days of diving. Had breakfast included as part of the package and it was great. I would personally stay at a smaller resort but its bonaire...its all GOOD. It really depends .... but the plaza was fine and as I said I would gladly go back.

That's the attitude: it's all good. As long as you're not expecting the Four Seasons, even the somewhat rundown rooms at some places are fine since the rest of the experience, underwater or in town, is excellent. I love Bonaire and am not ashamed to admit it.

That said, certain things can detract from the experience and that's often very subjective. Some things are objective. For instance, there have been reports of theft from hotels and condos in Bonaire and no one likes theft. Decent security is a consideration that everyone should agree on, though some might be happier with more, some fine with less, with a large part of the variance likely depending on whether one travels with laptop and expensive camera gear or not. Air conditioning can be another factor. Most places seem to air-condition only the bedrooms of multi-room "condo" style units, so some people might prefer a fully air-conditioned unit or a hotel-room type accommodation instead, others might not care a whit and be fine with island breezes. North or south of town? I've always stayed north and would like to try south some time, just for a change of pace. On-site drinking and dining facilities? If staying close to town, it's easy enough to drive (or walk) in to a wide variety of restaurants and bars, but I still like the option of dining in at times (drinking in is made easy by the fact that most accommodations include a fridge and many an entire kitchen too).

So it's all good, but there are several variations on the theme. I'd like to try them all, having considered Divi and Plaza and Harbor Village and Belmont and what's his name's rental condo (sorry whatever your name is, Alzheimer's most likely) even though I've always been a "north" person (Capt. Don's, Buddy, and Den Laman+++), only problem being I need to make another 10 or so trips there and at this point can't even figure out when the next 1 trip might be, darn it. I love Cozumel, and I love diving exotic spots in the Pacific whenever I can afford it, but something always pulls me back to Bonaire, whether it's dodging donkeys or driving to see flamingos, or just the complete mellowness of being able to really have dive freedom of amazing uncrowded (or even deserted at times) warm-water dive sites available literally at one's feet. If I ever were to uproot myself and move to a Caribbean isle, that would certainly be my place. Hopefully I can make it back next year.

Tell me about the spectacular airfare deal you got... details, please! Always looking for a great deal to Bonaire!! That's the most expensive thing about going there - if you can get a deal on travel to there, you are going to get a lot of BANG for your greenbacks.

There's no problem getting a truck if you don't stay at Capt. Don's or Buddy, what with 8 or 10 car rental places near the airport. Walking into town has always sounded like a nice perk to me, but I imagine the house reef suffers in comparison to Bari Reef (in front of Den Laman/Sand Dollar) for example. As for designated driver, I'm not so sure that's always necessary (though probably a good idea). When I met Larry (of Wildside Diving) for the first time over beers at City Cafe and told him I'd better get going while I could still drive, he informed me that there was no drinking and driving laws in Bonaire. Interesting. Obviously just because it isn't illegal doesn't make it right, but then again...

I have stayed at both Buddy's and the Plaza. If you are there mainly for the diving, Buddy's can't be beat. It is set up better for diving. If you are shore diving there, then the equipment lockers are right there on the dock. If you are shore diving via your rental car, the drive-thru tank loading area can't be beat.

If there are members of your party that don't dive, then the Plaza would probably be better. The pool area is great, and there is actually a beach !!! The Plaza is just not set up as well for shore diving there, although the entry and exits are simple at both dive sites....and the dive sites are great. The problem is getting your gear to the in-house dive sites. Yes, they keep a supply of air tanks at both sites, but no EANxs and analyzers, and very few short tanks. To get your gear and Nitrox tanks to the in-house dive sites involve pulling everything in rinky-dink little wagons that don't want to follow you......if you can find an available wagon at all.

There for the diving.....Buddy's.

There for diving and entertaining bubble watchers.....Plaza Resort.

Thanks for all the input, I feel like I got what I wanted from everyone. We don't expect a lot from a place to stay, other that a bed and food. We are perfectly happy with Hotel Cozumel and Fantasy Island. If you have stayed at either, then you'll know the type place we look for.

The Package we found for Plaza was all inclusive, two boat dives per day, shore diving, truck with insurance, NITROX, and airport transfers. In my book, that truly is "all inclusive".

The wife likes to do a couple dives, then sip mojitos on the beach, I like to do three or four dives, so this looked like a good package for us, and how we travel.

Unfortunately the airfare deal ended September 18, it was 28,000 Continental miles plus $50 for RT from IAH.

We'll put up some pic's around Thanksgiving.

Danny,
must say i enjoyed having a truck with all insurance. it made it a carefree, anxiety less vacation for me. AB carrental is right next to the dive shop. could not of been easier.
I personally am not really that thrilled with Boat diving but its easy and I suggest go to klein. its all goood.

We will be in Bonaire for the first time Thanksgiving Week... Staying at Harbor... Anyone else gonna be around????
