Several ideas but depends on how important location is, which part of the island you would prefer and how much you want to spend. There is not an up scale resort in or close to town. El Presidente and Fiesta Americana are on the south side of the island. They are both a $5 to $6 dollar taxi ride to town for your other activities. Both offer unlimited shore diving if you use their DO. El uses Scuba Du and FA uses Dive House. Both use large boats that carry 10-20 people if you don't mind large slow boats. Presidente is the nicest facility on the island as resorts go. Quite pricey. They have increased their prices about 35% over the last 2 years from what I have found so I don't stay there any longer. Just got back last week and stayed at FA in a Casita Suite in the back for the first time. Nice room and I got a decent deal for off season pricing. You don't have an ocean view but you have a bigger room with continental breakfast in the am as part of the deal. FA has other packages with other dive shops but I don't know if this option would allow for unlimited shore diving or not. You can always just just Dive House's tanks when shore diving. If the southern locations does not matter to you (really the best location) then send me a note and I will give you some spots north of town. I don't think you can go wrong with either of the options above.

Have a great time!

NightRaven77,

For the last 4 years, I've been staying at Plaza Los Glorias. The one and only complaint I have - is that the beds are hard. Other than that, the place is great for me. They are a 10 minute walk to town, or a $3 taxi ride (maybe more this year). The major shopping center for the Island is accross the street, so it is very convenient.
The resort is on the water, and all of the rooms (all of them) face the water and have a balcony. I have more pictures of the hotel, if you'd like to see them, let me know (backdad@pacbell.net).

I really enjoy the swim up bar in the pool, but wonder why i don't ever see anyone getting out of the pool when they have been sitting there for hours?

The restaraunt is pretty good, the breakfast buffet is nice pre-diving. Their service is great. The hotel itself is a little old and is showing wear, but overall I like it.

They have a Dive shop in the hotel, and they give tanks for shore diving. There is not really a beach, but a few piers and a cove to swim out of. The diving in front of the Hotel isn't great, but there are many people who do dive there as a warm up to the boat dives that leave from PLG's dock daily. Last year we did find several Octopus' in front of the hotel at night, so that's cool.

I want to take my young kids next year and I am looking at Paradisus as a family resort, I have heard great things about them. We are going to Cozumel and PLG on the 12th, so I can post a trip report between the 13th and the 23rd some time. If there is anything you specifically want to know, DocViking is a great resource on this board, look for some of his postings.

Here is what I like about PLG:
Closest Hotel to town.
Closest Hotel to the Island grocery store.
Massage parlor in the hotel is pretty good.
Bar in the hotel is ok.
Bar attached to the pool is good.
All rooms face the water and have a balcony.
The food is pretty good. Restaraunts in town are better.
Rooms stay pretty cool throughout the hot days.
Deep fried Peppers and a Sol beer are to die for.
Die shop is very friendly.
Boats are not too fast, but they are big and have room to lay out and talk to other divers.
Big pool facing the water.
Hot tub looking over the water, but it's small.
Videographer in the hotel for diving video service is good.
There is a store in the hotel that is pretty good too.
No beach means very little sand in yuor clothes and dive gear.
Free Scuba lockers.
Good disco across the street.
Cheap beer at the pool bar.

Here is what I don't like:
Beds are rock hard (but I have learned to ask for a mattress pad).
Hotel is getting old and could use $ome help restoring.
No real beach in front of the hotel to lay in.
Their Margaritas are too strong for me (and I really like tequila).
Thats about it.

Hope this helps.

Las Brisas and Dive Paradise,

Nighraven 77,

I just got back from Cozumel...well May. We stayed at LB and used DP. LB is under new mgmt (used by the Costa Club). Rooms are clean and they offer an All Inclusive. People differ on the attitudes towards AI, but for my wife and I it was the way to go. The food is buffet style but not to bad. DP has a dive shop on the property with its own pier. Shore diving is not too bad, had a couple good night dives off the shore. The beds are like Plaza, hard (concrete "frame" with a matterss). But for me it was perfect. It is close to town, just a little south of Plaza. The hotel is not on the waterfront, but they have their own little beach club, sand, chairs, palapas, restuarant, and pool. I would go back to Brisas (hopefully this year !!). Some good deals thru Bay Adventures (www.bayadventures.com).

Later.

NightRaven,
Amandasdaddy did a great job telling about Plaza Las Glorias. We were there May 31st until June 6th of this year and had a great time. The beds are hard but the AC was thumping in room 202.........64F one morning when we forgot to turn it down !! Some of the others in my group were not as lucky though. I thought the food was OK at the hotel, we walked down the street for lunch & dinner most days. We used Dive Paradise and they picked us up at the PLG dock every morning at 8am on the Tango. Good boat & crew. Downtown is only a 10-15 minute walk. Overall it is a good location.
