I'm planning on going to the Great Barrier Reef for a week mid November. I don't want a live aboard, take forever (more than an hour?) to get to a dive site, want 20kg if I have to take a sea plane, air conditioned room with no shared bathroom, and need beginner to intermediate sites. Any suggestions? Greatly appreciated!

There are quite a few places where you can effectively dive the GBR from the mainland or an island (short boat trip required). Consider the Whitsundays / Heron Island. So many others to choose from though.

I would recommend Port Douglas wholeheartedly! It's just north of Cairns and easy to get to. There are several day boats that will take you out for a day of diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and the village is a great play to stay and enjoy life. From Port Douglas, you can also sample other world heritage areas...the Daintree Rainforest and the Outback. We spent over a week there and enjoyed every minute of it :D

Plenty of day trips out of Cairns, but whether its Cairns or Port Douglas will still take an hour travel to get too.
