I prefer staying Kihei as there are better dive sites there this time of year. Go to www.vrbo.com and you'll find an inexpensive place to stay, if that's what you're interested in.
I go with B&B Scuba out of Kihei and send all my students and friends there. Book with them in advance as they don't advertise or tie in with timeshare garbage yet keep their boat filled. They have a little website where you can get numbers at www.bbscuba.com

you may also consider Maui Dreams Dive Co. for a local dive shop to rent gear/tanks from for shore diving, or for a local shore dive guide.
They also do a great deal of advanced training, right up to Instructor.
