Thanks Kim. I was recently in Japan for work. Hopefully I will return sometime and get to see this.

I would also suggest Yonaguni, its an awesome dive.

Also there are some ruins opening up in India this year I believe.

For the trully dearing amongst you:

Though maybe not old enough to be classified as archeological, this is an interesting dive site where only a few people have been (allowed). Let me first warn you about te disadvantages: the country has no other divespots and therefore you need to bring *everything* yourself, you can refill your tanks, but it will be a two to three hour drive. With the lack of diving, there is no decompression chamber availaibe. The history behind the site: A large tribe was living in a valley when the government decided to flood the valley to create a hydro dam. The village (named Ghansee) should still be relatively intact, although they haven't been able to find the full village yet. I know that as soon as I consider myself experienced enough I will be sure to do this dive!

There are some pictures on http://users.telenet.be/suriname/artikel.htm and the tour operater that arranged previous dives is form www.challengetravel.nl

As you can see visibility is pretty low and one more thing.....although the divers have not encountered them yet, the lake is infested with piranhas. Not the aggressive kind so they wont attack out of the blue, but if you bleed they will.

Try these guys, or better yet get air from them and pay a guatemalan who knows to show you where to dive. The lake rises and falls, no visible outlet, 2 or 3 rivers running in, elevation around 5000 feet, very clear water. Beuatiful w/ 3 Volcanos as your back drop. If any ones interested I would like to go back ,I lived there all of 2001 right on the lake, but didn't dive then.

I don't know the details, but a diver I know mentioned diving in Greece where there were many archeological and historic sites right off of the coast, with lots to see, explore and find.

Santorini (island in Cyclades, Greece) it's one of the best diving site for archaeological staff.

I was there on my honeymoon this time last year. I asked about the diving and all the archaeological sites are closed to recreation. It's too difficult for them to control the loss or disruption of the artifacts. Does anyone know if it is possible to volunteer to work a site while in country on short stays? There are several places at home that run classes for underwater archaeology and I've thought about taking it.

No I haven't yet, but I know the currents CAN be very bad - sometimes it's not so bad. My Japanese mate has done it though and it's supposed to be awesome. Sometimes it's a very fast drift dive through the ruins! :eyebrow:
Of course, at the right time of year you end up in blue water where the hammerheads are mating/schooling!

We have at least one member of SB - japan-diver - who I believe is an instructor in Okinawa and has been there many times. Run a search on his user name and you'll probably pull up a few threads about it. Otherwise look in the Zen Divers forum:

Black Sea it is also a very good site for diving AND IT"S VERY CHEAP. Original i am from Romania and in the Black Sea Not very far offshore (10-20 miles) it is hundreds of amphora's on the bottom of the sea floor. They are 2-3 thousand years old. I know guys they make good money collecting those.

Here is a site from Turkey: http://www.blueworlddiving.com/divingturkey.html
